Is Craftsman riding mower known to leak gas into crankcase?
Is this a common problem with Craftsman Riding Mowers?
solenoid does not completely shut off the gas and so it allows a siphon action to empty the bowl into the intake manifold. The raw gas then leaks down the cylinder wall and into the crankcase.

Hi Patty,
Which engine is in your riding mower? I'm assuming it's a Briggs & Stratton.
I work on a lot of B&S motors (small engines is my main hobby), and even though we don't have Craftsman in Norway, the mower brand doesn't really matter as it's the engine in question. Not many manufacturers produce their own engines.
I have never come across one B&S engine that is more prone to leaking gas into crank case than others.
If the solenoid isn't closing 100%, then it needs to be replaced. They are very cheap, and swapping them out is really simple.
The only "specialty" tool you'll need, is a very thin wrench to undo the solenoid.
