iMac keeps corrupting disks

In 2020, I purchased a brand new 2017 5K iMac which enclosed a 2Tb fusion drive, that is a 128Gb Apple (Samsung) NVMe SSD + a 2Tb Seagate HDD.

16 months later, the fusion drive crashed due to the hard drive being crippled with bad sectors.

Stuff happens, I thought...

I changed the original NVME for a 2Tb Samsung 970 EVO plus, and the original hard drive for a Samsung 870 EVO, both disks being highly rated everywhere.

Everything went fine for 15 months, but suddenly, the 970 EVO plus on which MacOS was installed locked itself into read-only mode because 100% of its SSD spare blocks had been used. Drive DX reports more than 5000 media and data integrity errors, for just above 16 Tb written.

The 870 EVO seems about to follow the same course, with 1040 spare blocks used, (50% of available spare blocks), and a flash read fail count in the thousands, for just 5Tb written !!!

My question is : What is the most likely cause for this behaviour ?

Has anyone had such a bad experience with an iMac ?

Yep that is what I often encounter when using an M.2 blade SSD instead of the proper Apple designed SSD or one of the 3rd parties which properly design the SSD for the sound up to emulate the Apple unit.

So you'll need to take the Samsung 970 EVO plus out and put in its place either iMac Intel 27" (Mid 2017-2019) SSD Blade Upgrade Bundle or Custom Samsung 2TB SSPOLARIS SSD

The error condition can also be due to the Fusion Drive setup was not cleared fully as you really don't want it with a dual SSD setup.

Hi Dan,

thanks for your reply, but while I understand that Polaris drives were designed specifically for the iMacs and should last longer than other drives on the market, I tend to think that the rapid failure of not one but three drives in the same iMac after less than a year of use for each of them is highly suspicious and should lead to a diagnosis of the PSU and the motherboard, before investing in a $500 solution.

Is there any accessible way to tell if the PSU and MoBo are OK ?

@benedictfranz - I can't see how the PSU would be a factor here, you would have more glitches within the CPU and GPU logic before the SSD would be effected.

The logic board might be a issue, but you didn't state having encountering OS crashes so that removes it as in this case the logic connections are different between the two ports. Here we have both a SATA and a PCIe/NVMe connection.

So again I can't see the issue is within the logic board as these two connections use different elements within the logic board. But! A misconfigured OS or something running like a virus or malware could be the cause.

Are you file sharing with anyone over the internet? What is your workflow? Music or Video work? Photography? CAD/CAM or DB development? Online Gaming?

You're right, if the logic is different between SATA and PCIe, a Motherboard problem is unlikely. The only problem I had with that mac was in relation to the drives failing, everything else is smooth.

I work on Java projects and databases, but not at a professional level, this is mostly a home machine, so, nothing really special I can think of. Besides the SATA drive was used essentially for storage purposes, hence the very low 5TBW.

At a moment, I came to link the high number of hardware resets returned by DriveDx (6400 for just over a year of usage) to the Power Nap functionality, and I was wondering if this could have any impact on a drive's life expectancy ?

How about posting the full DriveDX output on the drive/s so I can get a better idea on what you are encountering.

It’s possible you are leaving a file open when you let the system sleep which is why I prefer to shutdown Vs letting my system sleep for more than a few minutes.

Very interested by the opened file track. I do indeed keep many files open all the time, because, you know, that's what sleep is for : you leave it here, you find it here when you're back the next day.

How could that damage a drive ?
