1 Why won't it hold a charge after replacing the battery?
Changed 3GS battery. Battery icon reads full but phone shuts off after 10-20 minutes, giving 'low battery' screen.

Tyr hard booting it - hold power and menu buttons down until apple appears and phone shuts off. It worked for me

What happens if you put old battery back in?

Haven't tried it. Would that offer any diagnostic clues? Guess it would show if the new battery is a dud. Is this common now? Seems like it was a year ago.

"new" battery just means it is new to you.. the battery may have been manufactured a year ago and sat on a wharehouse shelf before being shipped to you, batteries degrade slowly whether being used or not.
