Fan goes on but won't power up

I have a iBook G4 that had a bad power plug. Prior to the plug getting damaged, the comp worked fine. I replaced the DC in-board following the excellent instructions on this website and plugged in with a known working adapter. But when I push the power button, I hear a humming noise and a fan whir, then nothing. I tried resetting the PRAM and PMU to no avail. The battery is charging , and the whirring seems to indicate power going in, but I get no startup chime and no screen flickers. Any ideas on what might be wrong?

Addition - when I press shift-option-command-power all together for a few seconds, I get a long boooop and the light on the front flashes.

Try taking it apart, and tightening the screws around the GPU&CPU on the logic board. if you did manage to mess it up and cause a cold solder joint, this would be a good place to start, rather then putting presure on the case.

many iBook G4s had a problem with a bad connection to the graphics chip, a common symptom was fans going on full but blank screen and otherwise failure to boot whenever you turned the machine on. pressure on the case in the right spot will sometimes allow the machine to boot - see this article or google for iBook g4 graphics chip problem or logic board problem and you'll find many reports. I had an iBook with this particular failure - no chime, no display, just loud fan spinning.

if your machine worked before but after repair shows these symptoms, it's possible you've accidentally aggravated the problem by flexing/moving the logic board - it apparently has to do with bad solder connections on the logic board

try pressing on the case as suggested in the article I mention to see if this is related to your problem

Well, I tried pressing on the track pad as the article suggested, but no luck. I guess I'll have to try taking it apart again and seeing if I can see what's wrong. Thanks for the suggestion!
