Dead MacBook Air - Issue with Apple Configurator 2

Hello all...hoping someone has run into the same issues, I have used Apple Configurator before successfully with a Mac mini 2018. I have followed the instruction on how to do it with the MacBook Air and actually completed successfully the second time I ran it"Restore", but still the MacBook Air did not came back to life. Since then every time I run it I get the same error messages and then the fans turn on at high speed for about 1 minute and then stops, then Apple Configurator 2 shows "Recovery" on the screen. It doesn't matter now what I do ( switched computers, cables, etc} I get the same results, so I know the MacBook Air it is not completely dead because of the fans and following the steps it goes into DFU mode.

  1. Can be placed into DFU mode
  2. I have run both "Revive" and "Restore"....Restored worked only once but MacBook Air did not came back to life
  3. I get the error message, once I click stop, it switches into recovery mode
  4. Only way to stop recovery mode is to hold down the power button for about 5 seconds, I am assuming it is doing some sort of shutdown,
  5. I can bring it back into DFU mode again following the proper steps, and the same thing happens over and over.

Any help would be great...thanks

@imac6comma1 - Lets backup here, why did you need to run the Configurator tool? Lets get the basics worked out first. Did you try internet recovery or even run the onboard diagnostics?

Hi Dan......the MacBook Air its completely dead....doing some research it seems this could be a fix.......which is something that happens to T2 Mac systems

@imac6comma1 - Sorry, a brain dead system is just that dead. What you are seeing is SMC is still working so the fan's are active.

Think how someones heart can still be beating but the brain is dead.

It sounds like you've done your best to reset things if the firmware was corrupted (which is what the configurator tool allows). I would look at the logic board for physical damage and I would look at the power rails to see if they are at the correct voltages it you want to see if something more physical is the problem.

Otherwise it maybe time to slide in a new logic board.

Quick update.......it finally took a "restore" to completion, but still nothing on the screen, or sound, but now I can hear and hear the force trackpad clicking when I press on it. Should this happen on a dead MacBook?

@imac6comma1 - Your system has three processors! You know the big one the Intel chip, But you also have the T2 chip and the SMC chip. So yes! your system may appear to work! The fan is spinning, the click action of the trackpad even with its kinetic engine will appear to be working as its' getting power.

Thats why I was using the analogy of a brain dead person as the heart can still be pumping and the skin have color! But clearly there's nothing home up stairs. Your system is in the same boat!

Even still this might be repairable as the CPU power rails might have an issue. But, without digging deeper, it's an unknown. Are you able to get the schematics and board view drawings? And the skills to read them and use a DVM to measure the voltages?

Nah...thats way out of my troubleshooting skills......I do know someone that have those skills...will let him take a look at it...thanks for your help!!!
