Fried Hard Drive. Worth fixing?

Friend has a 3GS with a crack in the back. And he says the hard drive is fried? He wants to repair it so I'd like to fix it for him.

Is this worth fixing? If so, what part(s) should I get?

Okay, first things first. The iPhone does not have a hard drive. It uses NAND memory and no physical drive. Find out what the phone does and what it doesn't do before you try to fix it. Could be something easy or something very difficult.....

Well he took it to a repair place and they said its the logic board. I tried to explain to him there's no hard drive. He thought I was dumb. Anyways, they said its not worth fixing.

So my question now is, is it possible to fix a logic board. I work on small electronics and motherboards for generators and stuff like that, so soldering is not a problem. I'd love to be able to fix a logic board and resell it OR repair some and stick it other people's phone to repair it. Any advice???

For example - I found a logic board on EBaY that worked fine but wifi didn't work, for $62. Guy had good ratings. Plus I found a the wifi part At a really good price. Is this hard to repair? Seems like a good deal on my part.

It depends what is wrong with the one from your friend. If you get it cheap, start with the power, replace the battery and check the doc connector. Clean it properly and see what you get. Always just do one thing at a time and do it systematically. Power first. So cleaning, checking for corrosion, checking for missing or burnt out SMD components and then the battery and dock connector. Anytime you buy someone elses non-working parts, you buy there problem. Some of those parts have been exposed to some home made repairs and mods that it can be difficult to work on.

I'm with oldturkey..don't take some repair guy's word for it unless he tells you exactly what the fault is. Assemble it and see what you get..try itunes and see if you get an error message. I'd advise against buying anything else until you know what you have...plus why buy a broken wifi when you don't know if its the chip or just the antenna? or as ot03 says..maybe they cooked it in the oven already? try this first phone, find out how they work and then jump in looking for more broken stuff.
