SSD Dying. Would like to try replacing. Need tools, etc.

I have just started to have problems with my fseventsd using a lot of memory and CPU. Apparently this presages the death of the SSD:(.

I am hoping to get a new M1 MacBook Pro next month but I’d like to keep the old machine going for as long as I can if possible.

I bought one of the first Retina MBPs in 2012 with only a 256GB SSD. Does anyone have a recommendation for the largest SSD possible that’ll work with this machine?

Also, I’d like to buy an iFixit toolkit to make sure I have everything I need to take my old machine apart and install the new SSD so I’d appreciate recommendations for which toolkit to buy.

Thanks in advance.

The largest SSD I’ve seen for this series is the OWC Aura Pro 6G 2TB and here’s the guide to put it in Sostituzione SSD MacBook Pro Retina 15" metà 2012 and the Pro Tech Toolkit will get you everything you will need.

That’s great! Thank you very much. I’ll look into getting all the bits and pieces I need and give it a go.

Will that toolkit be sufficient for the new M1 Pro/Max MacBook Pro?

@jimherd - It should be based on the iFixit teardowns https://www.ifixit.com/News/55323/2021-m...
