Water spillage, high fan rpm/extremely slow, improved after drying?

Hey all, I was working on my Macbook the other day when I spilled a small glass of water (like a quarter of a cup, thing literally slipped through my hand) and it fell all over the computer. Immediately I flipped the laptop over and dried all visible water (but did not power it off, because I’m an idiot), then, assuming I’d gotten it all since there was hardly any water in the first place and I immediately flipped it, finished what I was doing for another thirty minutes and then closed the laptop.

Two hours later, I opened it up to use and the fan was running at an extremely high speed and very, very slowly. So I think, crap, it must’ve been the water. I immediately power it down, crack it open in a dry environment and leave it to dry for 48 hours. After this I powered it back on to test it and it appears to be running fine again.

My question is — what should I do before committing to using it again? Should I remove all the components and blast with an air compressor? If it’s running fine, does that mean there’s no trace of water left in the system? What preventative measures should I take to ensure that the (lucky) “fix” is permanent?

Thanks for the help!

When you had it open, did there appear to be any liquid on the actual board? This sounds like something messing with thermal sensor data if the machine is throttling like that.

At the very minimum I would want to take the board out and check and see if there was any signs of liquid contact, corrosion or otherwise. I would limit or eliminate usage until you can do this, especially if you’re not sure if the board is all the way dry. It sounds like damage may have been minimal, but I would want to know for sure. It’s possible just cleaning up the board might be all it needs.

Did not see any liquid or damage, everything visually appeared fine. I'll try to remove the board just to check anyways, or possibly clean it similar to what Dan posted above.

@billfeins I would definitely recommend taking the board out just to be certain. I would also be curious about the trackpad. There is some sensor data there as well that could be causing similar symptoms. But the trackpad is extremely inconvenient to get at in this model.

@flannelist - fixit has them MacBook Pro 13" (A1706, A1708, A1989, A2159) Trackpad

While the older 2015 13" MacBook Air models leveraged the trackpad for the keyboard this series doesn't.

Ouch! This is not good ;-{

Turning it on put your system at risk from shorting out and now you have corrosion building up taking place.

At this point you’ll need to seek out an independent Mac repair shop who can clean the damage and try to patch your system backup. Time is ticking here as the longer you wait the more corrosion has a chance to do its damage.

Any idea how much I might be quoted, or if it's something I can do myself like Alisha suggested?

@billfeins - Can't offer you much as it all depends what is damaged. As an example the battery may need replacing if water got into the electronics.

Board repairs can encompass patching lines as well as replacing some of the SMT components.

Sadly water is not pure H2O it is often loaded with minerals and salts which is the worry. As its not the H2O its the ionic action of the minerals with the flow of electricity!
