LCD Backlight worked intermittently for awhile but its gone for good.

I have never dropped my laptop, nor had it gotten any water damage. The screen used to flicker black and back (the backlight that is) over a year ago and a simple restart or tilting it slightly usually fixed it.

Recently it completely stopped working and used an external monitor to do my work. One day I randomly decided to open it open and found that the display was working as per normal and I was careful to not tilt it at all and it worked.

However, the backlight would flicker whenever the laptop started getting hot and once I accidentally closed the lid and the backlight was gone again. The display works as I see it when I shine a light through the Apple logo.

I’m not sure if the issue is the backlight IC on the logic board or the display flex cable as the other posts I’ve seen seemed to give various answers.

Thanks a bunch!

This sounds like the eDP cable (incorrectly called LVDS cable) has become damaged (constant movement can break it down). Here’s the needed part 13” MacBook Pro Hinge Left - eDP Cable, Apple P/N 661-02360

Follow this guide to get the display assembly off Sostituzione gruppo schermo MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display inizio 2015 and then reference this teardown MacBook Pro Retina Display Teardown from Step 3 to 5. After lifting the antenna assembly off and to the side you can gin access to the other end of the eDP cable to replace it.

Inspect the logic board and display connector sides making sure they don’t have any corrosion damage to be sure thats not your issue. That would be the next possibly and check the logic board fully for any hidden wetness. Its possible the humidity was the source of the moisture.

hey! thanks for the speedy reply. just ordered it and will get it by the end of this month. Would it be a coincidence that this cable caused a green tint on my screen ? I'd usual see this tint over random parts of the screen when the display is showing something dark in colour (this was before the backlight died)

thanks once again pal!

@zanderking - Whoops! Hold the presses!

The Green tint often points to a display assembly issue. Be prepared to need a new display assembly. Or, better yet just replace the assembly as its a lot less work and risk of damage.

@danj Oops! Did i do something wrong? Sorry, I am kinda new to this site , do let me know what to do accordingly :)

Display assemblies are pretty expensive ranging from $500-$700 from where i come from. Nearly half the cost of the M1 MB Pro. In the event that the display fails on me completely, ill just stick to clamshell mode and use it as a desktop.

Thanks!

da

@zanderking - No, just forgot an important detail ;-}

As far as the costs: This model is still highly desired! Intels inability to get to 10nm chips created a mess for Apple with the 2016 and newer Intel based systems. Depending on your needs this system still might be worth the cost of a new display vs jumping the an M1 based MacBook Air/Pro system. Keep in mind the current systems are still running the low end chip, it will be later this fall or even spring before the more powerful versions show up

@danj Oh, so should i cancel my order for the EDP cable in that case, if it isn't gonna help?
