shows stll connected when unplugged from computer charger
was charging on computer and unplugged charger from iPod shows it still connected on screen and cant get it to turn on

I have had this problem before and did a reset and that fixed it for me. Here is Apple's link to how to reset your iPod. Hope it works for you.
