HELP! should I remove the battery?

I was repairing my friends I pod touch 4th gen screen/LCD. When i was removing the shield (being careful!) I cracked the volume/power button flex cable!

Now I have to replace the flex cable

but I'm not sure if I should disconnect the battery first?

I fear that I may do even more harm by soldering the new flex cable to the board with the battery still attached

The battery (of course) is soldered to the main board

. A quick look around the internet didn't reveal any information. New flex cable will arrive in a few days. I could use some help real fast.

Thanks

I agree that removing the battery would eliminate any chance of short circuit... But I have soldered in over a dozen volume flex cables on the touch 4 and never removed the battery. I would recommend turning power off though. The risk of a pad lifting is more likely when removing the battery than a short. You just need to weigh your options.

The solder contacts are covered with a glue that needs to be removed prior to removal. Careful not to bump the resistors, etc when working on the board. Also, if in a cold climate remember to wear a wrist strap to avoid a static induced short

Thank you Garry. Should I use a little acetone to remove that glue?

Garry you should write a guide!

I'm not sure about acetone. I just gently scrape it off.

Its always a good idea to remove all power source before adding or removing components. Otherwise you risk damaging circuit boards.

The battery is also attached to the logic board with a flex cable I'm not sure how to desolder and then resoldering a flex cable.

thanks for the reply
