Asus Laptop shuts off suddenly

I have this problem with my Asus S410U also referenced S14 in some websites. It has windows 10 64 bits with 8 Gb of RAM and only SSD disks

For two days now, it started shutting down as if it was suddenly unplugged. Then it wouldn’t start when trying to power it up.

At first I thought it was the battery that was discharged and thought I would charge it, plugging it didn’t charge it (the small led on the side didn’t light).

The only way that I managed to switch it on is by opening it up and disconnecting the battery (internal ), then if I reconnect the battery or plug the charger it works, but only for some time, then it shuts down without any notification with no time pattern)

This happens if the battery is connected or not, the charger is plugged or not, it doesn’t make any difference. I tried all possibilities.

I also have another installation of windows on another disk and tried it with no success. So it should not be software as the other windows in not up to date as I didn’t use it for a long time and it couldn’t be one of the latest windows updates.

I downloaded software to monitor CPU temperature (like CoreTemp https://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/) and it doesn’t reach higher than 55°C (approx 130 F)

I even tried to reset the CMOS battery, but I can’t find any on the motherboard!!!

I am confused as I can’t figure out what could possibly go wrong so suddenly.

Any idea could help

If your PC shuts off suddenly, and you already ruled out your CPU and electrical subsystem, try checking your RAM. See if you can open your case and reseat the memory sticks so that they are securely in their slots.

Of course I opened my case and actually I have no added RAM, so my 8 Gb of RAM is soldered into my motherboard

I have some news, I removed the back panel of my computer and the temperature never higher than 45 and now it didn’t stop for 36 hours. It must be the fan, but I see it working.

Could be another thing? what is the thermal paste? shall I put one new? where?

thermal paste is between the CPU and the heat sink and not something you need to mess with. Make sure there is no dust buildup and do not run it on a soft surface like your LAP because it really isn't a LAPtop.

Power it up, open a CMD window (or Windows Powershell), = = rt clk Start then click Windows Powershell or click RUN then type CMD and click it. Then type POWERCFG /BATTERYREPORT enter

That will generate a report which will be saved in your user folder. Read it. It will tell you the status of your battery. If the FULL CHARGE CAPACITY is less than 50% of DESIGN CAPACITY it will probably do what you describe. Mine is about 50% and it will last thru short power failures, a minute or so max.

So last thing I tried is to use an external keyboard and there, no shutting off, very weird

I unplugged the external keyboard and started to test the different keys, it looks that my left CTRL key does the problem, I used very often to save my work (lost too many jobs)

Is that possible that one key could do that according to ya all?

Anything is possible. We can only guess at this point. What I would do is to go here > http://en.key-test.ru/ < and run the kbd test to see if any other keys are stuck and verify what the computer sees as CTRL. Other kbd tests do not differentiate left and right keys, this one does. It will test the mouse also. There might be a CTRL combo that shuts down the computer but I am not aware of one. It is a long shot though

Actually everything is well detected by the website you proposed

I am thinking now that the CTRL key is pushing somehow on the motherboard, it is around the wifi card, as sometimes bluetooth and wifi get disconnected for some seconds.

It would mean that there is some of bad design??? but this is happening after 3 years ???

Any other idea?
