The best drop in supported CPU was the Intel Core Duo X7900 which can be found for $20 - $50 but the Intel Core Duo T7800 is also supported and can normally found cheaper. If you want you can fiddle with newer operating systems you will have to get a T9300 or T9500 but there have been issues reported.

More can be found in this link- replacing X7900 to T9300 for macOS Sierra install Is it worth it?

Which one would you pick based on performance and gaming?

@jellybean4_30 - These older iMac's can't support todays heavy graphics gaming. You really need an Intel i Series based system or even the new Apple M1 based systems. They have the needed power and graphics services.

@jellybean4_30 I would choose a new computer for gaming and for general performance the X7900 would be a decent bump over what you have now and you could probably get an SSD to try to speed it up. Unfortunately the computer is just old enough to do some modern things but it lacks the power to do more complicated things. This would be a good thin client for word processing and internet browsing.

@reid so if I wanted to use dosdudes1 Catalina patcher can I use the X7900
