Dipped in water by accident charging port side, now has a black screen

Watched a Youtube vid on ways to get it working, and I believe it may have helped, but then it got a software update and now it won’t come on anymore. After following the vid, I held the lower volume and power buttons until it had no power left, as I can look at charge percentage and see the screen where it’s trying to turn on. I still hear my alarms I have set up. After the software update, realizing I couldn’t see the screen again, held lower volume and power buttons until no charge again, possible I messed up somewhere, like it may have still had juice left or something. Sorry if this is confusing from the limited word usage and just bad English, but know it was by choice, not bad English speaker, haha.

Hi,

The impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone's operating design and could damage the components. The corrosion starts immediately and is ongoing until it is completely cleaned away

First do not try to charge or to turn on your phone and then remove the battery as soon as possible from the phone to minimize any further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available at electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. If possible do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain additives and is not as effective. If you do have to use it check the label to verify the amount of IPA. The higher the percentage of IPA the better

Here is a link that describes the process. Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics repair, especially surface mounted PCBs be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board. Remove the shields that may be covering some components as the water may have got in under there. The ends of any flex cables and their connectors need to be cleaned as well

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again.

Here is a link to the Samsung Galaxy A51 guides that may help.

If this process seems too daunting, take your phone to a reputable, professional mobile phone repair service, experienced in liquid damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.

Why did it come on before the software update? It was definitely working fine at the time. At the beginning, my phone screen was freaking out, but over time, I got the boot up screen. And Idk how to take out the battery. Like I said, after watching this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMwX48in..., and following each step, I held the power and volume down buttons until my phone eventually ran out of juice, then I put it on the charger and eventually, the screen came to life, with no problems interacting with the screen. I can still hear my alarms. It's been weeks since it dipped. It wasn't fully submerged, thankfully. I did hold the buttons until it ran out of juice from the cycle boot up again, but it may not have been completely out of juice, after the software update. It usually just restarts itself, but it didn't this time.

I don't know but it may just be coincidence. Unless the phone has been cleaned properly then more likely the components may be being affected by corrosion.

Sometimes water damage is not evident until a few months later. It depends on how bad it is. You won't know how bad it is until the phone has been opened up and inspected. But its your phone so your call.

Have you checked the phone's LDI (liquid damage indicator), you didn't say?

If that is showing then there will be more problems, maybe not so evident right now but definitely soon

The phone is waterproof, and while I understand that’s not always 100%, accidentally dipping in water for a half a sec should NOT have caused damage to a waterproof phone. This is a newer phone, so, there is no way to open it, or at least I’m not tech-savvy enough to feel comfortable doing so. Also, its my understanding that newer phones don’t have water damage indicators anymore. Or, at least my last 2 phones I could open didn’t have them. I read somewhere that they really didn’t do that good of a job indicating water damage. Honestly, I’m just confused by the whole thing, the first time we drained the battery, we were able to get it working just fine, until it updated, and automatically restarted.

@CatLeone

The link I posted shows that your model supposedly has a LDI.

Also according to what I can find out the phone is water resistant and not waterproof and there's a big difference between the two. Especially if you take normal wear and tear into account e.g. bends in frame etc. do nothing for the integrity of the case. I don't know why people put them in their back pocket

As I said the only way to really know is to open it and look.

Water and corrosion can cause funny things to happen and they may not be consistent every time.

Can only say that it's not going to fix itself and the longer you wait to get it checked out then the worse it may get.
