Can I tether my iPhone to my iPad?

Hi! I'm wondering if I can tether the 3G on my iPhone to my iPad, so I don't have to pay AT&T yet another $29/month for the iPad?

That way, I can velcro my iPhone to the back of my iPad, and I'll be all set.

I just need to get a new pair of cargo pants so I can carry it around.

Actually, I discovered that you don't need the iPad stand Apple is selling -- just use your iPhone from behind to prop up the iPad into "picture frame" position. Works great!

How on earth do you have access to an iPad?

I'm just KIDDING! :-)

Wait a week or two for the third party boys to have all America carrying some type of purse. In two years most men will wonder how they ever got along without one. They just have to make it look masculine enough. The change in attitudes will come because men are going to have to have this thing. You may be able to plug your iPhone into it and existing G3 service or certainly hacks to do it. In six months I expect to see the phone built into the pad, as soon as Apple cuts a deal with a G3 or G4 service provider.

Hah, yeah, you're right, it's going to make waves in a lot of areas, including fashion. My question was partly a joke, but thinking more about it it's a VERY real question -- I have my 3G network iPhone in my pocket at ALL times, so why would I want to pay for another 3G network connection for the iPad sitting in my lap? Tethering is a totally obvious question and it's going to be a huge concern. Plus, basic interactivity between the iPhone and iPad, i.e. I just took a picture on my iPhone, so how do I get it into my iPad for PhotoShop editing, etc.? Things like that will come up.

I watched the Apple video on this about an hour ago. Then I looked at the tech specs and saw “Wireless & Cellular” 3G model, Dock Connector to VGA adapter, Mac & Windows system requirements and USB port, dock connector, VGA, mono audio but with the dock stereo. I bet we haven’t heard a third of what this baby will do. I bet you’ll be able to sync your address book, iTunes & email. They probably haven’t released it for sales until they cut a deal on who gets the cellular contract. I don’t remember when Apple announced the release of a product and didn’t put it on sale the same day. I do remember they did that with system 7, but they had bugs to work out. If you can use the iWorks programs on it, that will relegate the laptops to Power Users only, just like the iMac and Mac Mini did to the Mac Pro. You bring this thing home and dock it to your 24” monitor and full sized keyboard and wireless printer and you’re in business. At work you plug your bar code scanner in for inventory. It may be wirelessly synced to your desktop.

They will sell 10,000,000 the first week, if they have them. They’ll be bootlegged on eBay just like the iPhones first were. Apple stock will triple within the year.

Eight years ago Apple market share had dropped to just 4% of the market, it was about $12 per share or $6 per share adjusted for a split. About the time Bill Gates bought 5% of Apples stock. Today it closed at $207.88. The iMac is now half the desktop market, http://www.9to5mac.com/desktop_mac_reviv.... Now they going to take the rest of the market. This is as big as it gets. This will change the world. I expect automatic translation programs opening the world to travelers and business, Star Trek’s universal translator is here, with the additional abilities of a tri-corder. Beam me up Scotty!

Just in: The basic iPad models will cost $499, $599 and $699, depending on the storage size, when it comes out worldwide in March.

Apple Inc. will also sell a version with data plans from AT&T Inc. in the U.S.: $14.99 per month for 250 megabytes of data, or $29.99 for unlimited usage. Neither will require a long-term service contract.

The iPad models that can connect to AT&T's wireless network will cost more - $629, $729 and $829, depending on the amount of memory - and will be out in April. International cellular data details have not yet been announced.

I would guess that AT&T would give a bundled price of iPhone & iPad access.

Yes, you can!

IF you are jailbroken you can download an application called MyWi. This tethers your 3G connection to a Wi-Fi network created on your iPhone, which you can connect to from your iPad! This is what I'll be doing for data on mine.

Sounds good! I guess the next question is battery life, i.e. hopefully an iPhone lasts longer than 20 minutes when it's being used as a WIFI hotspot.

No one will know yet, it's not shipping yet, so things may change. You'll just have to wait and see.

All the 3G iPads come unlocked so while AT&T are Apple's preferred carrier, there's nothing to stop you finding a better contract or even a Pay as you Go SIM.

yes, the 3G versions of iPad are UNLOCKED ! however they use a smaller sized micro-SIM card than the iPhone

since we're all just speculating here, I'll add my educated guess :)

the original question was about tethering an iPhone to an iPad - note that the iPad runs iPhone OS (now, v3.2), NOT Mac OS X. so what you're asking is if you can tether two iPhone OS devices together. this is not supported in the current iPhone OS, i.e. you can't currently tether an iPhone to another iPhone

it would not be a simple matter of plugging them in together (no such 30pin to 30pin dock cable exists anyhow) although you could argue there's still Bluetooth possibility. but either way it would need to be supported in iPhone OS that the iPad can receive its internet connection via a 2nd tethered iPhone OS device. I'm guessing it won't be supported as such.

The only way to tether an iPhone is if you jailbreak it (at least on At&t) then you run into the issue of connecting it to the iPad, which would be done over bluetooth, or a custom 30-Pin to 30-Pin dock cable. This would also require a jailbroken iPad (which doesn't even exist yet) so the dev teams can't even start since you can't get an iPad, then you would need an app in the iPad to receive the signal from the iPhone, and use it for internet. Overall, it would be a pain to set up, but theoretically might be possible in the future once iPad jailbreak is possible (yet apple has taken all possible measures to prevent this) and someone has taken the time do develop an application to do this.

Funny you mention jailbreaking, because there are apps for jailbroken iPhones that allow the iPhone to act as a wireless access point, so the iPad would then be able to connect to the iPhone's wireless network. Since the iPhone side of this is possible now, and we do know that the iPad has wifi, this solution will definitely work. The only downside is that the access point software on the iPhone drains the battery like crazy, so it's not a solution that would allow for hours of use, and it slows down the iPhone as well while it's in that state (which, I guess, is probably to be expected).

Yes, i have my iPod Touch (3rd Generation) jailbroken, and have a similar application, though the it allows the device to be used as a USB/Bluetooth wireless adaptor, for a PC/Mac. I didn't think of that at first, but it's a good idea.

Tetehering between iPhone 3G/S/ and Ipad is possible, you must have JB iPhone and install app MYWI, thats all., your iPhone turns in a wifi AP /data form 3G network/ and You can connect with Your Ipad over WIFI.

Just as a reminder, the 3G radio in the iPad only works with AT&T's network in the US. T-Mobile SIMs can be trimmed and used for data, but you will only get (very slow) EDGE-network speeds.

note: the lack of iPhone tethering in US to-date is purely an AT&T thing, nothing to do with Apple. Here in Canada we've had tethering on iPhone with Rogers ever since the OS supported it (it works great) - and this was long before any other carriers here in Canada offered iPhone. Regardless - at this moment nobody knows if the iPad will support tethering to an iPhone, it would have to be supported in the OS

If your Ipad is a 3g version , just pop in the micro-sim with sim card adapter into your Ipad .

Won't be able to receive calls though ,

BUT seen an app which now allows the Ipad to receive , you talk thru a bluetooth earpiece

If you have a dongle you could just use the Go Baby Mobile 3G Dongle MiFi to create a WiFi hotspot.
