Upgrade ssd? Ram? What Size?

I have a late 2012 iMac with 8gb of memory, 1 terabyte hard drive, and 3.1ghz processor. 660Gb of free storage. Runs slow with regular applications. Would the SSD upgrade significantly improve the speed? If so, what size should I replace it with? Would the same size be just as slow as the old one? Also would I need to upgrade the memory? It is a pain I hear on this model.

i’ve done many iMac SSD upgrades and it makes a huge difference, if it is a 27” iMac with the User upgradable ram slot. I would recommend just doing the SSD first and see if just doing that suits your needs, If you do decide you need more ram easy enough to upgrade that. If you have a 21” iMac where the ram slots are internal on the board. I would upgrade that to 16gb while you're already in there. But an SSD will make your computer feel better than new.

Storage size I would go with a 1TB. not to much of a price difference on 500 and 1TB.

Unfortunately it is the 21.5”. The ram seems pretty tricky to get to. They offer a 2 Tb SSD. Think I should invest in that for long term, being that I’m half full already? Also any tips on screen removal as to avoid breaking during separation?

Would recommend this kit as the plastic cutting tool is all you really need to get the iMac open. If the iMac is cold to the touch when you start I would warm up the edges a little bit with a heat gun. And don’t pull on the screen. The tape used is a foam tape that doesn’t really stick to anything when you try cut through it so just slowly cut away at the tape without really pulling on the screen.
