keyboard won't work, so now I can't even get into the laptop.

Hi, can someone help me as I'm tearing my hair out. I reinstalled Windows 10 onto my laptop but the keyboard wouldn't work, I took it apart and took the ribbon off and back on, it worked! Then the touchpad wouldn't work. I tried everything, installing smart asus, etc, but nothing worked and nothing shows in device manager. I thought the ribbon looked scratched so i bought a new one, fitted it and still the touchpad won't work. I then installed the ATK package and Smart gesture but now the touchpad and the keyboard won't work. Nothing shows in device manager and even attaching a separate keyboard won't work, so now i can't even get into the laptop. Can someone please help? Thank you

Hi @debryan ,

What is the model number of the laptop?

Can you use the keyboard to get into BIOS on startup at all?

Press and hold F2, then operate the power button and keep holding F2 until in the BIOS menus.

If you can get into BIOS check if you can navigate through the different menus using the keyboard

Hi, thank you for your reply. Yes i can get into the BIOS easily using the keyboard but it refuses to work on startup. I can't get to restore it, I'm trying F10 and F12 but they don't work. Its an ASUS X502C series. I have tried everything even restoring defaults but nothing works.

Ok i will try that. I have now got the keyboard working as I reinstalled Windows so guessing doing a repair won't help now. but touchpad is still not working.

Hi @debryan ,

Try the following to repair Windows.

Start the laptop in the normal manner and when it boots into Windows press and hold the power button until the laptop shuts down.

Do this 3 times in a row i.e. start > boot > force shutdown > start > boot > force shutdown > start > boot etc.

On the 3rd attempt it should boot into the Windows Recovery Environment menus.

If it does then once in the menus select Troubleshoot > Advanced > Startup repair and follow the prompts to repair the installation.

Do not select Repair this PC because if you select the wrong option after this you can erase all your data as Windows will be reinstalled.

Hi @debryan ,

Sorry I got it wrong. and got a bit lost as to what you tried.

I thought that the keyboard was also still not working in Windows.

Did you try uninstalling both the ATK Package drivers and the Smart gesture drivers (go to programs and features in Control Panel) and then restarting the laptop and allowing Windows to boot etc and then checking if the touchpad appears in Device manager?

If still no good, then install the latest ATK package drivers from here and restart the laptop and check.

Do not install the Smart gesture drivers at this stage.

Hi, thanks for all your help. I have done exactly what you said but still no signs of the touchpad showing in device manager. I installed the ATK package only and restarted. I just don't know what to to do. I am wondering if it is a connection problem inside the laptop, or a motherboard issue.

@debryan

Did you check in Device Manager > View > Show hidden devices?

If still not seen by Device Manager it may be a hardware problem.

Check in BIOS > Advanced > Internal Pointing Device and make sure that it is enabled. If you have to enable it remember to "save the changes" when exiting BIOS and restarting the laptop.

If still no good try a full power refresh in case the BIOS is corrupted.

Turn off the laptop and open it up and disconnect the main battery from the motherboard (disconnect only - you don't have to remove it). Remove the CMOS battery from the motherboard (remember the orientation usually +ve on top) Here's how Asus X502C-RB01 CMOS Battery Replacement

Press and hold the laptop power button operated for a full 30 seconds and then release. Reinsert the CMOS battery - remember the orientation. Reconnect the main battery and re-assemble the laptop. Connect the charger and switch on and check if the touchpad is now detected and works. There may be a message about the date and time being incorrect - this is normal as the BIOS had been reset to default. Once it has been corrected it won't show the next time the laptop is started. Also when the CMOS battery is out check its voltage with a Voltmeter. If it is <2.6V DC replace it. The type number is on the battery

If still no good try replacing the touchpad. Here's a link to the Asus part numbers for the touchpad.

If you search online using the appropriate part number (it is usually printed on the touchpad somewhere so that you can verify which one) you will get results for suppliers. Doing it this way will ensure that you get the correct part for the laptop._
