Why can't my Mid 2011 27" iMac boot with LCD attached?

Dear all,

I recently bought a used 27” iMac (mid 2011) with a defective ATI RADEON card.

I replaced this with an SSD, I7 2600 CPU and replaced the GPU with a GTX770M mobile (modification to the cooling block). Putted everything together etc.

When I try to boot it, the right fan tries to spin but immediately stops, like an engine failing to start, but trying.

When it disconnect the LCD cable from the motherboard it does boot. Is there something wrong with my LCD panel or cable? Or is it a CPU or GPU problem (I7 CPU and GTX770M upgrade) Other did it before without a problem.

Hope that you have a clue and have some usefull tips.

With kind regards,

Steven

Let's not use vulgarity even in a three letter acronym.

Ok thanks. I meant TDP Thermal Design Power restriction problem.

Well you have a few issues here!

To start with the given GPU board you put in. The GTX770M board was never offered in the iMac systems. There’s a bit more than just putting it in! Can I put an mxm gtx 770m on it?

The next issue is the drive swap out putting in a 2.5” SSD while that can be done you also need to add iMac Intel 21.5" and 27" (Mid 2011) SSD Temperature Sensor as Apple uses custom drives in this series for SMC to gain access to the HDD’s internal diagnostic thermal sensor. Here the SSD might not offer one and if it does its only accessible via SMART which this series won’t use with its SMC logic.

As to the replacement i7 CPU you needed to say within the Sandy Bridge family using an i7-2600. This is required as the needed micro code for anything else is not present in the systems firmware.

Lastly, it sounds like you changed too much at once! I would have just done the GPU first getting it worked out, then I would have tackled the CPU and then the drive last. Now you have a big knot which will require undoing things to isolate out what still needs fixing.

Thanks and clear pointers to isolate the problem. Only thing is that I have a defect GPU (radeon), the IMAC didn’t come with the original HDD.

I will reinstall the old CPU and install the defect GPU (artifacts, but works), but will boot probably. So that I can at least see what then happens with first only the SSD installed as new component. I do have that SATA cable with small white (temp) sensor (OWCCBLIM21SDPW) Will install that as well.

Thanks again and will keep you updated.

Appreciate the help! :)

Steven, I have exactly the same problem with GTX770M and iMac2011. Did you find the a solution for your problem? Thanks.
