No charge going to the battery.

Ok, my fellow Mac users. I got one for ya.

I came home last night to do a bit of editing, just to see that my MagSafe charger was amber, (last I can remember it was green).

I open my laptop, boot it up to see that it had 15% battery life, but no lightning bolt to indicate that it was charging.

Before I could do anything else the life finally ran out and now it’s dead

I disconnected and plugged in the MagSafe and it lit green, but when I press the power button all I get is an icon of a battery with one red bar and a lightning bolt underneath it. When I discharge the MagSafe I get the same icon but underneath is a magnet = ⚡️ telling me to connect the charger. And when I do it goes green and back to the other icon, but will not boot up.

I have done the SMC reset (multiple times) and it forces the MagSafe to turn from green to amber, but then I don’t get anything on my screen at all.

I've disconnected the battery, then plugged in the charger to see if it will boot or even turn the fans, but I get nothing.

I have an appointment with the Apple Store, but wanted to see if anyone else has had similar issues.

Update (02/28/2021)

Additionally, I left the laptop unplugged to drain it entirely, and plugged the MagSafe back in and it immediately goes green until I force it with the SMC reset to turn amber. Still no boot up.

I've had no issues with this laptop, it’s been amazing, save for this.

It’s a month old refurbished Mac from Mac of all Trades. Inside looks immaculate, not a spot of dust. No swelling of the battery or burn marks anywhere. And I was able to get into my Mac before it died, so I don’t think it’s the logicboard. But I’m no expert.

anyway. Just trying to give as much detail as possible so everyone has as much information about my situation.

Thanks, Jason.

I’m suspecting your battery died!

In most cases I would have recommended installed and running CoconutBattery and having you take a snapshot of the apps main window and post it here for us to see Aggiungere immagini ad una domanda. That way we could have gotten a better idea on your batteries health. But! Given your systems age its the most likely issue.

Here’s the needed part MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Late 2013-Mid 2014) Battery and here’s the guide to put it in Sostituzione batteria nel MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display versione metà 2014 If this is too much for you you’ll need to find a local Mac shop which can do it for you.

I installed the new battery which had 77% life. I plugged in the charger, and it immediately goes green and isn’t/won’t charge the battery.

I do an SMC Reset (left shift-control-option and power button for 10 seconds. I’ve also disconnected and reconnected the battery-hold power button for 5 seconds) and the light will go orange/amber, BUT the laptop won’t turn on and now has 6% life. (How the **** did an SMC Reset drain nearly 70% of my new battery’s life???)

I unplug the charger, plug it back in, goes green, Mac fires up, BUT still no charging.

is this a LogicBoard issue, or a MagSafe issue?

please help.

@Jase Edwards - Did the system boot up? With the charger plugged in run CoconutBattery and post a snapshot here for us to see.

da

I’ll run CoconutBattery when I get home and get that for ya.

And yeah, I can get to the log in, put in my password and get to my desktop and to my folders.

Just the MagSafe won’t charge the new battery.

And Dan, as of now 5:37pm 03-05-21

I can leave the charger in, green light, and the MacBook Pro will stay on, but no charge. As soon as I unplug the MagSafe it dies.

da

The charger is not charging! The systems SMC logic is not seeing it. So either the MagSafe DC In board is damaged or the charging logic is damage on the logic board.
