Twitching washer, not spinning

Help!

Suddenly our LG front-loader washer stopped spinning.

When ever the drum should spin, I can hear the motor, and there obviously is torque, I can see the whole drum part twitching. Sometimes the drum finally manages spinning, but then there’s a grinding sound with it, so there’s friction some where.

In any case the machine stops trying at some point with error LE, which indicates a blocked motor.

By hand I can easily spin the drum, and there doesn’t seem to be any sound that would indicate worn bearings or something stuck.

Thanks for hints!

Hi @theonlyandy ,

Here’s an image taken from p.17 of the service manual that shows what the most likely problems are that can cause a LE error code.

Block Image

(click on image to enlarge for better viewing)

It is a bit awkward to use the manual online as you have to change the page number below the document every time that you want to go to the next page and also in this case the “page number” in the box is one number ahead of the actual page number in the manual. No doubt you’ll work it out.

To download the manual you need to register with the website.

On p.15 of the manual it shows how to get into the diagnostic test mode

If it is determined that the hall sensor switch may be the problem, the part number for the hall sensor switch (aka washer rotor position sensor switch) is 6501KW2002A The supplier example is only to show what it looks like and the cost. Just search online only using the part number to find suppliers that suit you best.

Here’s a link to all the parts for the washer that may help if there are other faulty parts. Just find the part number of the required part and search online using the part number.

Hopefully this is of some help.

Thanks a lot! The online page for that error code is not at all that helpful. I'll check cable connections, that's the easiest thing to do to begin.

Just another question: Is the hall sensor switch responsible for alternating the magnetic field? Hence, if it was broken, it would be possible that the drum can't turn or turns again the magnetic friction?

da

@theonlyandy

The hall effect sensor verifies that the drum is rotating and also possibly where it is actually located in regard to its position as it turns.

Looking at the image of the part there are most probably more than just the one sensor in the assembly.

The drum twitching means that the control board is trying to start it turning but is receiving no verification from the sensor that it has moved so it stops and tries again. Can't have an out of control drum turning

of course it could also be a motor problem as well and that it can't turn the drum even though it can be rotated manually i.e. not enough magnetic power produced to turn the motor due to faulty winding or connection etc

So we removed the stator to check for the spools, and it seems that the wire is broken on two spools, effectively rendering 24 spools non-functional. That probably was the cause why the motor couldn't spin the drum any more. We'll replace it and see…

If I understand correctly, the stator includes the hall sensor. We changed the whole stator and the machine works better than before (: Thanks @jayeff for your help.
