That part is in fact the EMI foam. It is normally adhered to the hard drive in order to minimise vibrations.

Are you sure your iMac is the 2012 model?
I remember this as being part of the Sostituzione hard drive con SSD iMac Intel 27" EMC 2309 ed EMC 2374 da 27" jump down to Set 15.
