iPhones are water resistant and not water proof. As they age, that resistance will weaken, more so if the device has been banged up , bent, flexed or submitted to harsh environments. Sadly, washing a device is never a good idea.

Every water damaged device reacts differently and you can never really predict how they will fail and wether or not they can be repaired. If your phone is still booting, that’s a good thing. However, you don’t know yet f just the screen is damaged or if it extends to the logic board and LCD drive circuitry as well. Additionally, water damaged phones tend to develop issues later on which is why most repair shops won’t even try to repair them beyond extracting data.

At this point, make sure you have a suitable backup of your data while the phone still works. Then I would follow these guidelines:

  • Open your phone and remove the logic board
  • Inspect the logic board, especially around the connectors and look for corrosion.
  • Inspect both sides of the board. Unfortunately, most of the board is covered in shields. That's usually where the damage is occurring.
  • Put your board in a container with >90% isopropyl alcohol and let it sit for a while.
  • Use a soft brush, like a toothbrush and lightly brush away any corrosion you see.
  • Rinse in alcohol and repeat.
  • Let it air dry for a day.
  • Re-assemble and hope for the best.

You could try to replace the screen if everything else works well but caveat emptor, water damaged phones tend to be rabbit holes…

(Before anyone reads this, note I’m not a professional, I just simply had an idea)

You could put it in rice for a day to draw out any remaining water. Also, I would check on your SIM and SD cards, because they hold a lot of your information.

Please...no rice. That myth has been totally debunked by the repair community, sadly it still returns prominently in internet searches but it does absolutely nothing more that letting a device sit on a counter doesn't already do...which is nothing.

The device has to be opened and cleaned, the water needs to be displaced, not allowed to evaporate, which is what causes the corrosion issues in the first place.

Hi @elizabeth120306 ,

Not a good idea about the rice.

Here's a link that may be of interest. Rice is for dinner, not repair
