How can I fix the "check print cartridge" problem?

My HP PSC 1200 series printer (! - this device wasn’t in the list of printers to choose from, so I selected one that seemed similar) recently ran out of ink. I replaced the cartridges, but not with original ones. I chose a discounter-alternative that was guaranteed to work.

At first, the printer printed finely, but after a few weeks the “check print cartridge” signal would light would up.

The printer’s interface on my mac would then state “The black cartridge is faulty or incompatible with this printer”.

I have tried various solutions, but neither an original HP cartridge nor any of the suggested button-combinations (to print a test page, for instance) have worked. In fact, apart from scanning any of the printer’s functions seem to be disabled by this error. I the printer’s utility I can’t order the printheads to be cleaned, an alignment page to be printed, or anything the like. I would always say “The printer is in an error state”, and that I had to remove the error first. Also, it would meanwhile indicate that both cartridges (black and colour) have failed.

Does anyone have experience with a similar problem and, ideally, a solution?
