Should FaceID work when LCD opened?

I’ve purchased iPhone 11 with cracked display - FaceID not working - sometimes showing “not available” but many times just “move higher, lower - closer iPhone message” which I think confirms it is kid-of-working.

100% crack was on cameras and whe worse half crack opened on that “mirror” thing which is in my opinion that projector - but not sure.

I just wanted to know if I should be able to test FaceID when screen opened so no cracked glass on the way.

There is something mirror on that area on display where ‘Projector’ present.

I don’t want to spend £80 on display if FaceID not working :(

I’ve tried with opened screen to activate FaceID but no success as not easy to point directly on face what cannot see what is happening on display - but normally it should even start doing scanning.

Thank You

Update (09/24/2020)

As I’ve learned from this video - “dot projector” is not cracked and “Flood illuminator” is fine - no signs of water damage

Perché il Face ID non funziona dopo una riparazione

If there are any cracks in front of the sensors it can diffuse the light and cause errors. You won’t necessarily know if you can fix the issue unless you at least inspect the assembly for any damages. I know that screen can be a little pricey but even if you can’t get FaceID to work, I would imagine you got a great deal on an iPhone 11.
