What can I do to upgrade my iMac past El Capitan?

Hello,

I bought this iMac from Amazon for just a couple hundred dollars about 2 years ago. However, since then I am coming to realize that I can’t do anything without upgrading the OS on this system. It’s currently running El Capitan. I’d like to be able to run Sierra or even High Sierra so that I can download Microsoft office apps from the App store.

I’m being told that it’s not upgrade-able. That I have to buy a newer Mac system. I’m a single mom of 2 and on limited income. I can’t fork out $2k for a new MacBook or iMac.

Are there any other options?

The EMC 2210 models can run DosDude1 macOS Sierra patcher

I would strongly recommend sticking with Sierra as the highest version for your system.

@starrla1979 - Unlike Windows desktops the guts inside your iMac are unique to Apple and Apple alters things enough that you rarely can drop in a different logic board or replace a CPU chip of a different series.

Sadly, that's the case here while Apple did carry things forward upgrading the logic board from 32-bit to 64-bit between the 2133 to the 2210 series allowing then to be swappable if you have a 2133 system. But the issue remains you won't get enough bang for the buck to make it worth the cost and the risks! Review this guide to get an idea how much work it is iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210 Logic Board Replacement You would still need to locate a good board and parts right now are getting hard to get due to COVID.

@danj I found this (link below).. could i upgrade what i need to cheaper than buying this iMac? or would i come out cheaper just buying a good used one like this?

A half glass of milk is no different than a half empty glass of milk!

I'm not sure I follow your logic here there just isn't any upgrade options for your system that makes sense.

The system you've found on Amazon is this one: 21.5" iMac 3.20GHz Core i3 (Mid-2010) It will support macOS Sierra (10.12.x) which is as high as I would recommend on this series.

I understand your plight getting a used system like this one is a good direction. Just be careful I've been stung on Amazon and eBay a few times.
