Why OWC Aura Pro X2 NOT COMPATIBLE iMac17,1?

Hello, decided to put in your iMac 27 "(iMac17,1 EMC 2834) late 2015 NVMe ssd

Studying the question read https://beetstech.com/blog/apple-proprie...

I liked the option Aura Pro X2, and here at the forum it was offered, but the manufacturer's website indicates that it is this late 2015 model that is not supported (https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/S3DA...)

Block Image

Perhaps who knows about why 2013, 2014, 2015 (May), 2017 supported, but 2015 late NOT COMPATIBLE ? as far as I understand it Gen. 5B SSDs continue to use the 12+16 Pin ?

I found and read a lot of articles / stories about how they put an SSD on this iMac through “Sintech NGFF M.2 nVME SSD Adapter Card” (https://www.macworld.com/article/3386117...)

Well, in general, it is clear that it works well PCIe 3.0 x4, but Aura Pro X2 will not work at all or is there a problem such as bootcump not working or hibernation, sleep?

As far as the MacWorld write-up: On putting in an M.2 SSD into iMac's, Go for it if you feel so confident on what they wrote.

My clients today tend to be heavy users, Video and Music production either as a profession or as students. Before I went on my own, I worked at some large engineering firms supporting their Mac systems.

We where lucky to get some top notch engineering talent to help us review M.2 drives for MacBook Pro's. At the time Apple was not selling large SSD's (1 & 2 TB drives) which a lot of our staff needed.

Our testing at that time showed the adapters where not very good and even still today I've encountered a few systems which I needed to yank them to get the system to be functional.

To be clear! I'm not a hater of M.2 drives. If the systems interface is designed to support them use them! It's when you force fit a drive which was not designed to work in the system by the system maker is the root issue.

Thanks for all of the answers!!!

I have iMac 2015 and I’m already mentally ready to buy a new 2020.

But I decided to try to give this system a 2nd chance for another 1/2 year (then I will still change it)

Scalped my i7-6700K, planted it on liquid metal, removed some of the throttling,

The SSD (I have a SATA SSD in the system now) If there is such an opportunity to put NVMe blade SSD I would like to.

I’m from Russia and our purchase of the original Apple SSD does not cost $620 like you it costs us $800/900, which is quite a bit of unreal money for an upgrade for a couple of years.

Therefore, I was so interested in OWC Aura Pro X2, I asked them there, without explanation, there is simply no support, so I created a topic, maybe there is a person who knows.

Thanks again, 90% of the links on this topic I found on your forum!

Hi Jorge,

Are your combo (iMac Late 2015 + Aura Pro X2) still working as usual and stably?

Thank you for your trial so much (y).

Cheers.

da

Hi Thanh.

Everything still working fine, no problems so far.

I work with motion and FCPX

My Imac Late 2015 came only with a 512 SSD Drive, no fusion drive or HDD

I change the ssd for aura Pro x2 and i bought a apple sata cable refurbished from Ebay and put a new ssd samsung 860 Pro 1TB too.

It was the first time i open the imac, i´m not a expert. I follow the OWC videos and wasn't dificult to change de ssd for aura x2 pro (you dismont allmost everything, but is like a Lego :) )

I install a new fresh OSX Catalina and he recognise both disks, without any problem.

Best regards

That's great Jorge. Feeling high motivation to upgrade :)). Thank you so much.

da

@thanhtrdang - Sounds like OWC didn't want to test things out. If it works then I think its safe to use.

da

Before i buy it, i send a mail to OWC asking if aurora x2 pro works on Imac late 2015 A149 17.1, with a native apple ssd and no fusion drive, because in the site says that was not compatible, and they say yes, i could make the update.

I think the issue was that some imac 2015 with only HDD (no ssd or fusion drive) dont have a nvme slot

When i saw the system in imac, de apple ssd apears in Serial ATA. AHCI version 1.3 and 4x

Now Aura x2 apears in NVme items

Hello.

Here's an infomation for those who are still unsure if they should upgrade.

I have an iMac Late 2015 (17,1) 27" 5K A1419 EMC2834 with 1TB Fusion Drive, which means 1TB HDD via SATA and 24GB via PCIe.

I have never done such a procedure before. But I can say in advance, it was worth it.

I ordered two upgrade kits from OWC to refresh both drives.

- Aura Pro X2: https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/S3DA...

- OWC 6G SSD 480GB: https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/K27I...

While waiting for the package, I backed up my data and splitted the Fusion Drive.

For the upgrade, I studied various YouTube videos and the one from OWC.

It took about an hour to disassemble all the components.

I used a brush and an air compressor to clean the individual parts once the iMac was open.

The Aura Pro X2 Flash SSD fit right out of the box.

Including the installation of the new SATA SSD, it took about 45 min to assemble without the display. I guess the thermal sensor is no longer necessary since 2015, but it was included, so to be safe, I installed it.

I installed MacOS Big Sur, played the backup and tested the whole system first. Everything worked flawlessly. Even Hibernation Mode, and the fan ran quietly.

Sticking the display took about 30min, and you have to be extra careful.

Four hands would probably be better, but it also works with two.

Conclusion:

I don't know why OWC calls the upgrade kit incompatible for the iMac Late 2015. Everything works smoothly.

Was it worth it? Yes, definitely. The speed compared to the Fusion Drive is immense.

Tests with Black Magic showed a write speed of 2250 MB/s and a read speed of 2920 MB/s.

So I can only encourage anyone who is unsure.

Good Question! Best to talk with OWC on there reason. I would just put in a real Apple unit.

As far as M.2 SSD’s its one thing to put them into a MacBook Pro as you can get to it without difficulty. Its another having to rip your iMac system fully apart to replace it.

FYI: I’ve got a drawer full of dead M.2 SSD’s with their adapters! I won’t put one in an iMac.

" I would just put in a real Apple unit" Well, that's conditionally what Apple offers the most https://beetstech.com/product/1tb-solid-... but here on this site there is also no support for my iMac 17.1 (although in other places there seems to be) .

No problems with installation, changed the processor

"FYI: I’ve got a drawer full of dead M.2 SSD’s with their adapters! I won’t put one in an iMac." Yes, I read a lot of topics and have seen this phrase more than once)))

@snake_r - Did you check out my info card? I fix systems,

I'm not a sales & support person for OWC. iFixit supports what they sell, this blog is supported by unpaid volunteers like my self.

I do recommend OWC products where it makes sense.

And, yes I've posted my warning a few times on M.2 drives. The Apple interface is not the same. It does offer a NVMe/PCIe interface plus a few more lines Apple uses which are used to enable sleep mode.

One would need to reverse engineer the interface and Apple could alter things (as they have a few times) BeetsTech write up here The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs is the best guide we have!

OWC and Transcend made the effort to reverse engineer the Apple SSD and produced working units.

Thanks for all the very helpful information. I am thinking about taking the plunge and opening my late 2015 27” 5K retina iMac (17,1) to swap out both HDD for a 2 GB SATA SSD, and the currently *dead* blade SSD for a new (OWC) 1 TB SSD. Seems risky to spend about $500 for all the components and parts to upgrade a 5 1/2 year old machine given that it may not work (or I might screw it up). But the 5K retina screen on this machine is still top notch and would love to get a few more years out of it. Your success stories @jorge and @thanhtrdang are encouraging!

I can confirm that the OWC Aura Pro X2 works fine on my 17,1 iMac.

da

Hi Henry, how has the upgrade held up these months? I´ve bought the same kit (the item was listed for Imac September 2013 & later...) but haven't installed it yet.

da

I did the upgrade in May 2021 and it is still working great over 4 months later. I use the computer regularly and have had zero issues. Very worthwhile investment to upgrade and very happy.

FWIW I have noticed that the blade SSD speed has decreased some as I’ve used it. Originally read/write per Black Magic was above 2000, now around 1300. But measuring speeds is a little bit of a beauty contest. Real world performance remains very satisfactory.

I have a 17,1 iMac as well (3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5, 1TB Fusion Drive - 1TB HDD with 24GB NVMExpress)

I am getting the 1TB OWC Aura Pro X2 SSD and the 2TB OWC Mercury Electra 6G SATA

Question: How did you partitioned, cloned/backed-up the older HDD and NVME drives?

Thanks for the great info!

Michael, Just use TimeMachine to make a backup to an external drive. Then pull the drives and put in your new ones. When you restart you'll need to run the Internet recovery services or what I prefer is to first setup a bootable OS installer USB thumb drive with the macOS I want to use. That way I can then just boot up under it to prep my drives using Disk Utility and then run the OS installer on the Aura Pro X2 blade SSD (the boot drive). Diring the install it will ask you if you have a backup to restore at which point you plug in your TimeMachine drive and restore your stuff!

Don't use cloning apps as they don't work with the newer APFS drives and often times your disk has a corruption or two which would be copied over unlike the TimeMachine restore. I haven't used cloning apps in over 15 years as they are just not needed any more on Mac's

As far as your Fusion Drive blade SSD it is a cache drive to your HDD, it is not holding anything that your HDD doesn't have. If its still healthy get a OWC Envoy case to hold it for another data transporter.

da

Thanks Dan, really appreciate your prompt reply. I'm considering just getting a 2TB blade and unplugging the hdd instead of replacing it with another ssd (no longer fusion drive, not needed...). What do you recommend? 1 2TB blade and no sata or 1 1TB blade and 1TB sata? thanks again!
