PS3 Freezes in game after 20 mins?! I suspect the optical drive

Hi ! I have a CECHP01 160GB Fat PS3. It freezes after 10 mins of any gameplay(disc). It won’t freeze anytime else. I put in a game and left it on the in-game menu for hours and it won’t ever freeze but when i start playing the game, it’ll freeze within a few minutes and the disc drive makes a noise as if the disc is stuck and can’t spin. Just an FYI, I had the same problem 2 years ago so I replaced the blu ray drive, put in the old motherboard and the PS3 worked fine for a year before the problem started again. I suspect it’s the blu-ray drive motherboard that’s faulty. I’ve also applied new thermal paste to the cpu/gpu just incase it was overheating and it still freezes. Any help would be appreciated !!

Hi!

Alright, I think it’s the laser which is faulty, but could also be your harddrive…

I would test with another hard drive first as this is really easy to replace (perhaps to replace it with a SSD?). If it still freezes, you should replace the laser or drive. You can’t replace the blu-ray drive it’s PCB as it’s required that it matches the motherboard, otherwise you can’t play games.

Thank you for replying. I'll try to check the laser but the only reason I have doubts is because this is the second blu ray drive thats giving me the same problem which is why I think the motherboard could be faulty. (It's the original motherboard from the original drive that I put into the new drive). I'll change the HD and see if that helps too.

Update: I replaced the hard-drive, PS3 runs fine, put in a game, froze 5 mins in. It's definitely something to do with the blu-ray drive or its motherboard. Also side note, when the ps3 freezes and i touch the off button, it won't turn off unless i push the cd button aswell and then once the cd comes out, it turns off.

Hi! You replaced the drive 2 years ago, right? Was it new back then? Could be that it's facing the same issues as your old drive back then. If the PCB of the drive is dead/dying, you must replace the motherboard too. But this will be expensive..

Yeah I bought a brand new drive. Worked perfectly for a year then same issue. Yeah it's got to be the PCB, if its gone through two good drives. I'm gonna see what I can do with daughterboard of the drive. PS3 was a special gift so I wanna try to see if I can fix it within reasonable cost/time haha

Alright. Where do you live? States? If yes, I know a website where you can buy motherboards for a reasonable price.
