My iPhone 4 won’t work anymore and I was going to scrap it but wanted to see if there was a way to access any old messages etc on the device. Any help would be appreciated

What is wrong with it, it’s most likely a bad battery, you will have to fix it to access the data

Hi,
It turns on and asks to be plugged in to iTunes but then gives two options of update or restore with restore being the option that erases everything on the phone the update looks as if it will work and starts to do something but then says that the iPhone could not be updated.
I’ve given it up for dead but just wanted to ask on here before I resigned myself to that being the end.
Could you try plugging it in directly via usb and then opening your file explorer and selecting that device, this may work
