Why wont my ps3 recognise USB update?

Hi all,

Starting to pull hair with my ps3. Have my old ps3 fat 60gb. Had yellow light of death. Go it fixed from a friend. Then noticed the discdrive wasnt working. So did a system update to try and fix it. Then dident work due to discdrive not working. Bought a new Hardrive to help but that dident work. Bought a new discdrive board and now what im finding is that my ps3 now want recongise the USB for the update.

Can anyone help?
