The screen flicker and with double image

My Mac book pro have developed a problem in which the screen starts to flicker and it gets worst progressively. It starts with couple of glitches and flicker and it progress to having two or more image of whatever on your screen flickering vertically and if I let it continue further the screen goes blank.

It’s been a while I have started to notice this problem. However I have been trying to find out what exactly triggers it. For a while I suspected a certain application start it, but now Im almost sure that it’s has something to do with the system temperature. If you have the system running without any specific app running and specially if its charging after 1-2 hour start to happen and the only solution is to close the lid and let it a be for 20- 30 minutes and it will give you another 2 hour to work with, The sooner I start using the computer the sooner flicker starts.

I hope someone can help me with this issue.

Update (05/31/2020)

As requested I have attached the video.

This I would say is at 60 -70 % bad it can get. From here become so bad that you can’t read anything on screen any more.

Hi. I have the exact same problem. How did you solve the problem?

@Deo Carlo Llamas - Review the answer below if you have then exact same diagnostic process outcome then you too need a new display!

Not good ;-{

Let’s see if we can localize where the fault is, as I’m not sure if you have an issue within the display or if the problem is within your logic board.

What does an external monitor show you plugged into your USB-C port via a dongle?

If the external display is also showing the same image jiggling that tells us the logic board has a problem. If the image is stable and clear then your internal display has failed.

Let us know what you find - Sorry ;-{ Both parts are expensive! Did you take out the AppleCare+ services contract? If you did then you have it to bank on. Depending on the date you bought the system and the country you live in you might have other warranty options. As in example the EU & UK have a two year warranty.

Hi Dan

Thanks for reply. I have tried it with external monitor / tv and there works fine.

So I guess its the lcd.

I have bought this through Amazon in US with out apple care :-( since I'm always traveling and most of the time no access to a proper apple service center anyway.

To make the mater worst right now I'm stuck in an island north of north sulawesi, Indonesia. The city on mainland on lock down because of the virus and across the water from my island big jump in COVID cases and no proper medical care in the whole province.

Any idea how much the display would be ? Is it difficult to change if I manage to bring it here some how?

Hi Dan,

I have a very similar issue, if not the same, which at first thought was caused by Big Sur beta - but also occurred in Windows (bootcamp).

What is not mentioned (but might be implied) is that a restart fixes the issue straight away. Does that change anything in your diagnosis?

I have the same 2017 15" macbook pro; and I'm also running a second display over usb-c hub to HDMI (which outputs fine when the issue occurs).

Thanks,

Savvas

@Savvas Ashiotis - If the problem comes and goes and comes back then clearly its not a setting issue a restart might have appeared to correct.

Your system shouldn't need restarting! In this case the T-CON logic which is part of the display assembly is drifting likely caused by heat buildup causing the sync system to be distorted. This is why you need to replace the display assembly to fix this.

If you still have warranty coverage or AppleCare+ I would encourage you to get to an Apple Store or authorized service center to have it fixed ASAP! Free or even half the cost is better than the full cost.

I would also recommend getting a good thermal monitoring app like TG Pro so you can monitor your systems temps and raise the fans RPM's. Also make sure you are not blocking the vents and dust out the system so the fans and fin areas are clean.

@danj thank you for your insight; really appreciate you taking the time to respond. Sadly I don't have any warranty, but I'll seek an authorised service centre to get it repaired.

Did it work out after changing the lcd screen? I mean the flickering never shows up again?
