MacBook doesn't wake after closing lid unless I reset smc

Hello,

I’m having some troubles with my 2017 non-touchbar macbook pro. The macbook works operates fine but once I close the lid, I can’t wake the computer unless I reset the SMC holding CTRL-Option-Shift-Power. As long as I don’t close the lid, I can sleep from the power menu and wake it by pressing any button the keyboard. I’m thinking it’s a problem with the lid sensor. This obviously gets very annoying since I cannot close the lid without having to completely reset the smc and reboot every time. Could anyone help me out?

In my case, I've observed by using an external monitor that the internal display disappears in MacOS. I don't know if this can help you...

By the way, I have this problem in a Late 2016 MBP 15"

Hi James, Have you found the solution to this problem yet? I'm experiencing the same thing with same model year mbp.

I had the same problem. I turn off power nap and it works

It doesn't work for me and I don't have the "Enable Power Nap while plugged into a power adapter" option checked,

I remember watching a video posted by Louis Rossman on an issue like this. I believe it was a sensor used to detect when the lid is opened. It uses a magnet and when the sensor goes bad, it doesn’t wake up the display. Try connecting it to an external display and see what happens.

Same problem here for A1708 Macbook pro. History: Macbook did not turn on at all and a repair shop diagnosed, that i needed the logic board to be replaced. I found it way too expansive. One year later I changed the logic board by myself. The spare part is a used but okish logic board. Now, the mac works and i could safe my data and make a factory reset. However if i close lid, the mac book turns off screen but does not go to sleep. If i turn it off and turn it on without closing lid, all is good. When i turn off and close lid I cannot turn on again. I always need to power on with smc reset.

Some guys said its a problem with battery cable, but i checked it and it does not make any sense. Maybe something with the display cable? Or lid sensor? But where is this sensor?

Having the exact same problem here with a MacBook Pro late 2016 with touchbar.

I think it has something to do with the serie of problems people experienced since the the 10.15.4 update (Kernel Panic on wake up). https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251...

I managed to work around the problem by disabling Power Nap in the Energy Saver control panel and then by turning off the sleep mode altogether, but yet I still need to reset SMC everytime I try to restart after the lid has been closed.

Very annoying.
