MacBook Pro Late 2013 unable to write to ANY external media

Weird one.

My MacBook Pro, Late 2013, is unable to write to ANY external media. Anything that is plugged in (by which I mean SD cards or USB drives) comes up on the desktop, I can read file contents, but cannot write. No matter which port I plug it into.

I have tried the media on other (various) devices (iMac, MacBook Air & another Pro) and it works everywhere.

I have created a new user, and tried there- no luck.

I have tried to alter permissions on the drives, but they say I should be able to read AND write.

Help!

If the read works, there is nothing wrong with hardware.

When in doubt, reinstall OS.

Or it could be just you were trying to write to a NTFS volume on a Mac, which is not supported natively.

Go into Disk Utility > Disk First Aid select your external USB drive did it find a problem?

After you’ve copied off the data on the USB drive go into Disk Utility again and this time reformat the drive to GUID Journaled file system afterwards see if you can then write to the drive.

Also what macOS are you running? And if you’ve got any antivirus apps running and if they are all upto date?

Update (04/29/2020)

Sadly, this is starting to sound like a PCH level problem. A rare one for sure!

Apple no longer offers a block diagram in many of its schematics so this is just for reference. In this series the PCH is part of the CPU package

Block Image

As we can see all of the USB connections go the PCH logic! Time for a new logic board.

It began when a new SD card I bought couldn’t be written on, and yes- that was when I tried first aid and formatting it in Disk Utility. Neither worked, it errors out.

The same drives are in perfect health according to other machines.

No antivirus, OS X High Sierra.
