Replaced Battery, Still Wont Charge.

I have a MacBook Air 13'“ mid 2011 and it would sometimes charge and other times not charge.

The condition grew worse and worse until the MacBook wouldn’t turn on at all. I figured that this particular MacBook only worked off of battery and somehow, if the battery went bad that the ac adapter had to go “through” the battery to the power supply.

The times it WOULDN’T charge, the magnet charger would be GREEN. I’ve since replaced the battery and it’s doing the same thing. when I plug it in the screen gets brighter and the battery logo gets a lightning bolt (and the magnet is lit Green) but when I click on the battery icon while its charging it says “Battery is not charging” and says “source: AC adapter” and the battery keeps draining. The catch is, once the battery dies, the laptop wont turn on, even when I plug it in.

NOTE: I’ve just used my same charger on a Macbook Pro and my charger worked just fine.

Your logic board has a problem within the charging control logic. One or more of the MOSFET’s has been damaged. Likely from a bad or fake MagSafe charger.

This is going to take a bit of work to fix and someone who has the proper skills and tools to do it.

Part of the problem is you can’t tell the real from the fake! And may people selling them will claim they are real. The only source I buy chargers is directly from Apple!

Apple at one point made a large effort to stop the importation of these fake chargers, but with the intro of the USB-C standard for charging their MacBooks, Apple has stopped fighting. In fact I think they see this as a great way to kill off the older systems forcing you to get a new Mac!

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. So the charger is definitely oem because it came with a MacBook I purchased. Suppose that could still be the issue?

If the MagSafe cord is messed up then it can short out causing damage to the one wire comm link (the center pin) Here's a good reference: Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters

I just recently used the same cord on a different MacBook Pro and my charger operated as normal. When you say “ One or more of the MOSFET’s has been damaged” can I purchase that/replace myself. I do have some limited knowledge about working on computers (being an electrician who mostly works on fire alarms helps too). Do you think it might be a new logic board would do the trick or maybe an l/O board or both?

A bad or fake charger doesn't mean it doesn't work. You are just playing a game of Russian roulette, So today am I going to get the bullet or the empty chamber? Did you ever watch the movie "The Deer Hunter' Even if you don't get the bullet over time you are fatiguing the circuit as well!

Replacing the I/O board is a start if the one wire comm line was damaged. From what you stated I don't think that's it. Replacing the main logic board would be one way to fix this MacBook Air 13" Mid 2011 Logic Board Replacement but its the most costly way to fix your system.

As for fixing this your self, it sounds like you have the basics on how electricity works. But, this is more to it with transistor logic and how they act as switches. Thats a deeper skill of understanding as well as working with tiny parts.

I have arthritis in my hands (fingers stiff) which has sidelined me from doing it any more. When the weather gets warmer its not as bad so the last few years I've been limited when I have the finger dexterity to do it. I know my limitations, are you sure you know yours? I'm not saying you can't, I'm just saying is it wise?

You'll need to get the needed tools to do micro soldering as well as getting the schematics and boardview drawings to use with a good DVM to check things. To give you a taste of whats involved review Louis Rossmann YouTube Vids

I think you see its much harder that you think. Where about do you live country and nearest city, lets see if we can aim you to someone who can help you locally.

Dan, thank you so much! When you say micro soldering, I’m not ashamed to admit it’s out of my scope of skills. I live in deland, fl (just outside of Daytona beach). I don’t think I would trust the folks at geek squad, but there are some computer shops around.
