MacBook won’t boot into recovery mode

So I used the dosdude1 patcher on my MacBook to get Catalina running on it but I was experiencing some issues (not logging in, infinite loading while logging in), recovery mode doesn’t work (tried cmd + r, cmd + option + r, etc) tried removing ram and disconnecting battery and HDD, won’t show boot options when you hold option at start up. I can’t use it at all…. any ideas?

Lets backup here a bit... Before you started was system working at all? How much RAM and free space did you have on the drive before you installed Catalina?

Did you make a backup (TimeMachine) or have an external bootable drive with Sierra or High Sierra?

I went from 16GB to 12GB (1 8GB, 1 4GB to use an 8GB stick for another laptop) and I had only used around 80GB out of 1TB. I made a fresh bootable usb drive with Sierra this morning (3 hours ago ish) @danj

Let’s disconnect the battery as well as the internal drive and all other external connections, now press the power button for a good 15 secs. Now with your system on its side plug in the MagSafe charger and the power button again, did the fan startup? Give it a few minutes do you get the blinking question mark in the folder? If you did plug in the bootable USB drive did it grab?

Disconnected battery and HDD, flashing folder came up. Plugged in external HDD, nothing happens. Could it be corrupt install on the external HDD by any chance?

Ouch! I suspect you didn't format with GUID/Journaled.

Let's check! Restart the system and this time press the Option key with the external drive connected (leave the internal disconnected!) You should see the Startup Manager on your screen, do you see the drive listed? If not its not setup properly.

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

Yeah It just skips past, I’ve held option before turning on, right as I turn on, after the chime, used an external keyboard etc
