Battery replacement kit: can't get screen off using iFixit suction cup

I’m attempting to replace my iPhone 7’s battery using the iFixit battery replacement kit and guide for this model.

How on Earth are you supposed to get the screen off using the suction cup included with the replacement kit?

I’ve tried heating the phone for a minute as advised and I’ve tried pulling the suction cup with a fair amount of force. However, the screen won’t budge and I’m not sure how to hold the phone down as I pull.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I’d prefer not to buy another tool like the iSclack.

If you are still having problems after Bens response and are old enough to know what a feeler gauge set is I would give them a try.

I never use a suction cup when doing screen replacements for any iPhones. I use a razor blade the rectangle disposable ones you buy in bulk in a small box packet.

Use that to simply cut the screen adhesive that goes under the plastic bezel edges of the screen. Only needs to be done on the sides and no need to pry up or push in top much just enough to dislodge the adhesive.

I then use my nails to run around the screen to loosen the adhesive apart. That should be enough to get the screen up. Be careful with the bottom right though that's where the screen cables are also top right.

Thank you. Why don't you use a suction cup? Have you tried previously and had a bad experience of some kind?

It doesn't always work especially when the screen is cracked, or for example opening an iPhone 5 to 8 plus that has a screen that has a tendency to separate from the plastic bezel.

I have just found it to be a lot more reliable and easier to remove the screen.

On a 5s for example I'm scared that if I use the iSlack I'll rip the home button because of how the cable plugs in.
