will shift into any gear but it wont engage.

My 2005 Passat TDI will shift into any gear but it wont engage. I had to put new seals into transmission and I put new seal around oil pan because it was only starting out in 2nd gear I had no 1st gear slight leak , I should add I had driven it around just a bit while it was like this just a slight leak starting in 2nd gear .Well that slight leak turned into a gushing leak so I took transmission off engine and replaced ring or seal on the inside I put it all back togather to tork specs hooked all connectors back togather put the right transmissions fluid in and happily found no leaks while running ,however I put it gear and it will engage into any gear but will not engage into a driveable gear including reverse. Can anyone please please tell me what it could be I would be extremely grateful indeed .Thank you for your time………Mike.M in Idaho.

Let's start with the basics - Trans fluid level is full? What color is the fluid? Do you have a scan tool available so you can check the computer for fault codes?

If the fluid you removed was discolored it may suggest you burnt up the gear pads and they are unable to grab to actually move the car. Sometimes a burnt smell can come from the fluid or the transmission suggesting the same.

B5 TDI Passats have a bad transmission and they typically fail early. I would recommend getting another used one but a used one could find the same fate OR if you are wanting the car to last for a long time you could upgrade to a manual transmission albeit, this does require more research and more work. There are YouTube videos on this exact model performing this swap to help.

Good Luck.
