Why has the free space on my SSD disappeared?

The last time I used my Inspiron 14-3452 I had about 4gb of space free on the SSD. I turned it on today and the 4gb are gone. The SSD is showing as completely full. I have not install any software. since the last time I used the machine. I added up the size of the folders under the root and came up with only 12gb, 15gb less than the SSD size. Also the size of the Windows folder is 4.9gb. I know the Windows folder was larger than this the last time I checked it. Would appreciate any suggestion or comments on this.

I’m assuming your model is the one with the eMMC SSD which is embedded (soldered in).

You could add a large SD memory card for more storage.

If yours is the hard drive version of the Inspiron 14-3452 then just upgrade the drive to a larger capacity.

People please, use the Internet BEFORE you purchase something. There are a lot of products out there that are impossible to repair or upgrade. Do us all a favour - don’t buy them or the situation will not change. Money talks.

It's worse when they're used :-(. They litter the market and end users keep this garbage in circulation because the previous owner messed up. You can do better with an old business laptop instead of this garbage for about the same price or cheaper if you're willing to fix it up. Hopefully it can be worked around with the cable and potentially disabling it if you can't have both. Now I need to be extra sure on sites like eBay.

Yep; eMMC garbage. I was afraid of that once the storage issue came up with how many people buy these things. IT'S $250 NEW FOR A REASON AND DOESN'T SELL FOR NOTHING BY ACCIDENT!

Agreed. I pickup up a good used HP business laptop for about $150 more than the 32GB eMMC gutless wonder. It is very fast and 1920 x 1080 video.

Upgradable everything CPU, RAM, SSD, Wireless, and Battery size. Steel frame even! Free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro

Slide one buuton over and battery comes out. Slide the other and the bottom panel slides off. Like a bloody F1 pitstop!

Oh and a downloadable pdf service manual. I could go on...

@aactech It's not as light or pretty but a good Haswell busines laptops smokes them any day. Even old ones like the Sandy and Ivy series put them to shame outside of I/O on the Sandy hardware (no USB3). I wouldn't recommend a Sandy system anymore (unless it was cheap) but at least Ivy business over these things. When someone says 4GB or less free it's red in terms of what class of "SSD" is used.

These gutless wonders die from one drop - a business laptop may not like it, but it'll survive. Throw an SSD in and you've got a eMMC gutless wonder killer in every possible way. The only reason people probably buy these turds is free Office 365... 2 subscription years is $10 cheaper then the permanent 2019 license you own and never have to rent. These eMMC things were made to lure people into renting Office.

It’s a freaking 32GB SSD (eMMC) system :-(. You may be stuck with this garbage board unless you get lucky and find a SATA connector with AHCI Option ROM support.

You need to pray this has provisions for a SATA connector and the AHCI option ROM or you’re stuck with the eMMC SSD and a 128GB SD card. The service manual can be found here if you want to check. The required cable can be found on eBay with the following DP/N: 3V4XY.

Try with a junk drive to check if it works. It may be present logic wise, but lacking the Option ROM.

Hi @wayland1922 ,

Have you got “System Restore” enabled?

Control Panel > System > System Protection > Protection Settings > Select the C drive > Configure and check if there is any current usage and the size. To get to Control Panel click on the Windows Start button, left side of the Taskbar and type Control Panel in the search box. Click on the Control panel icon that appears,

Have you checked the size of the Recycle Bin?

Have you checked the size of the Temp folder? Click on the Windows Start button, left side of the Taskbar and type %temp% in the search box. Click on the Temp icon that appears, then drill down through Windows Explorer until you get to the Temp folder, right click > Properties to check its’ size.

Also it is prudent not to load an SSD to more than 70-80% capacity. This link explains the reasons why.

Here are some tips for OP to free up space. Reduce system restore point to 1% (Basically only one restore point, or disable it all up if you like to live on the edge :)).

Next one is to disable fast startup as it wont make much of a negative effect on an SSD. Typing the command line: powercfg -h off in cmd.exe / a.k.a command prompt as administrator, will in result disable windows fast startup and remove the hibernation file. This tends to save about 2-5 Gigabytes.

Last one is to compact the OS's system file.

@benjamen50 I leave my system restore space set to 2GB to have some breathing room and adjusted the virtual memory to 4GB hard limited.
