How compatible are ribbon cables with each other?

I would imagine you could grab any ribbon cable that had the same pinout and at least the same gauge or bigger to handle the voltage. But I wouldn’t get a random one because there may be a fit issue or maybe it doesn’t flex the way the OEM cables are meant to. Replacements are available if you know where to look. If you can’t find them on the regular websites like amazon or ebay. Check alibaba or aliexpress.
