If you are talking about a replacement battery, these generally tend to get somewhat warm while charging.
Other than that they should not get hot unless the battery has gone bad.
Any replacement battery that is listed to work on the iPhone 4 can be used. iFixit does sell replacement batteries. Note that 4 and 4S are not the same battery and can’t be used vice versa due to the connector being physically different.
