Device completely unresponsive, won't turn on.

Hi,

My device is a Lenovo Yoga 720 15-IKB (it doesn't appear in the device list.) The other day I simply returned to it after the night and it didn't turn on.

This is what I know:

The power supply is fine, it gives the normal 20v and I also tried another one to be sure. The problem is not there.

The led indicator that indicates charging does not light up when the device is plugged in.

Removing and reconnecting the battery does not solve the issue.

Removing the battery and powering up while plugged in and without battery does not work.

The battery seems to give off the indicated voltage, so it's probably not completely spent.

From somewhere in the middle of the motherboard comes a sound that reminds me of a relay switching on and off. This noise comes after varying intervals. This is the only noise the device makes after repeated attempts to turn it on. Given the state of the device I can't confirm 100% that the device doesn't turn on, but if it does it's awfully quiet about it.

The power button is still clicky.

The device normally stays on a desk, plugged in.

That's all I know that comes to mind.

Any help sorting this out would be super appreciated, as I'm very confused by what could have happened.

Thank you!

I have a 730 with the same issues. When pressing the power button an small electric noise is heard, not lights no nothing. Figure bad board, pulling m.2 and scrapping the unit. Lenovo's are cheap crap.

I think the problem is located in the power circuit on the motherboard, which prevents the battery from charging and the computer from starting, the clicking noise might be a security measurement to switch off the main current path because something shorting probably, so clean the motherboard especially the area around the power plug.

Thank you for the answer!

I have tried without success to clean the board. The underside was completely covered by foil though, so I left it alone.

I'll also add a picture of the board around the power and battery plug in case it helps.

Everything looks good and I only have one stupid theory, since this PC comes with an internal battery which cannot be easily removed, then manufactures could design this kind of laptops to work only with the battery inserted like smartphones, so if the battery is somehow damaged and sending wrong information about its temperature then the system will immediately shut down (click noise) to prevent further damage.

Replacing the battery may solve your problem according to my theory, you can borrow one to test it or wait for another person to give another answer.

If that's the case, wouldn't powering it up without the battery work?

Mine does the same thing, and I replaced the battery not even 3 months before it did this. I think it's the motherboard. Very upset about it.
