White screen / Logic board damage

Hi Everyone

I was happily using my MBP (late 2011) last night when it just went totally dead, upon starting again I now have the dreaded white screen :(

I had a good look around here last night and I am aware that this might be the end for my trusty machine but it's quite posible that I haven't tried everything and maybe someone can offer some advice?

Diagnostic showed no hardware faults.

Last night I tried resetting NVRAM & SMC, Verbose mode - (white screen after apple logo)

Single user mode (works) Choosing start up disk - for some reason this shows me 2x indentical boot volumes to choose - one gives white screen after apple logo, one gives no entry sign, when I removed the SSD and tried to boot externally from it on a USB-SATA adapter it also gave me two entries, same results.

Recovery gives me white screen after apple logo, Internet recovery starts, then white screen after apple logo, made Sierra USB Boot key - white screen after apple logo.

I read about the hard drive cable issue and tried booting to USB with the main hdd cable disconnected - white screen after apple logo.

I found threads on the gfx/C9560 issue so I took the Logic board out and measured 1.35V at the positive side of C9560. Continuity to ground was 0.15ohms on the negative side and 31.2ohms on the positive.

This morning I started looking for the board number so I could check if it needed a 220 or 330u Cap when I noticed this damage to small IC on it :/

At this point i'm beginning to think that i'm flogging a dead horse, I don't know what that IC does, but there's at least ripped track, Is this time to give up?? or can I get this machine working again, I really need some encouragement right about now.

Since you have a 2011 board it’s useless to go further into looking at the C9560, it doesn’t apply to your Mac, it’s a known issue of the 820-2850 of previous series. Unless you’ve attempted to fix something yourself, I wouldn’t be overly concerned about that mosfet and the misplaced resistor in pictures for themselves but they might be an indication someone already put his hands on that board before. Being a 820-2915 I wouldn’t be surprised somebody temporarily “fixed” the faulty GPU that plagues your series by “baking” the board.

Symptoms unfortunately point to a faulty GPU, which is pretty common on those Macs. You can find on the internet several ways to disable the discreet card (hardware, software and hybrid) and use the Macbook with just the integrated Intel HD 3000.. dive into some threads around and pick your own choice.

Well I found this one that says 100% sure fix. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/for...

But happy to take advice on other guides that are known to work.

@spotta The Efi writing solution you linked works for sure, I've used it a couple of times myself too. Providing you don't replace the hard drive and don't reset Pram is a stable, long lasting solution that doesn't require any hardware mod and it's easily done.

I went for this one in the end and it's finally booted up successfully https://gist.github.com/blackgate/17ac40...

Thank you all for your help, It did start going a bit funny about a week ago, programs crashing, higher than usual temps, that must have been it starting to go, but hey, at least I can use it again, even with only trhe single screen.

@spotta They are just different flavors solutions, as you have noticed there's a number around by now. As far as it works again I'm happy :)

This Component is Q4260 is a Firewire Port Power Switch the pad thats broken leads to Nowhere. Have you tried to make sure you hard drive boots on another macbook ? Make sure it reads tru another computer?

da

Yep, the drive boots perfectly on my wife's MBP using a USB-SATA adapter.

da

I also hooked it up to a Windows laptop and ran the Samsung drive fitness software, which gave it 100% health.

I did have a second hdd in place of the optical drive, but removed this when the problem started to ease troubleshooting

@xterminal Thanks for your help, luckily my audio interface is USB and I don't have any firewire equipment!
