Why is my external speaker not working?

I have had iPhone since 10/2009. Never had a problem with it.

I keep it in the Otter case (amazing durable case). It's always in my pocket. I have found condensation on it before. I shower with it under a towel, 3 feet from shower (I also take cool showers).

I took a bath the other day (sunburn). I put the phone on an object 3ft off the ground from which it fell. It was okay, I presumed the case saved it once again.

Minutes later, my song randomly stopped playing. I figured it needed to charge, sound comes back. Sound stops again after about 2 minutes of play time while charging. Never have gotten the sound to work externally again.

While messing around with master shutdown, phone turns on and displays hardware not compatible with iPod. I only ever seen that message once, never since.

I test headphones & ear piece, both play sound.

I plan to buy the parts and fix it myself but first I must diagnose the problem.

THINGS I'VE TRIED:

- regular shutdown and master shutdown.

- flip vibrate to audio.

- called someone and tried the speaker.

- tried ring tones.

- bumped it lightly.

- cleaned USB connector & cord with alcohol.

- plugged & unplugged headphones/USB charger.

I am a musician that is at wits end.

The phone works fine otherwise.

Please, help me, it will be greatly appreciated.

it sounds like your dock connector is damaged or the connection (no 4) is loose.iPhone 3GS Dock Connector

this is the part you would need. the guide to check connection and/or replace is on the right of that screen.

Hey John, pollytintop is right, there is a problem somewhere between your dock connector assembly and the logic board. Before you buy a replacement dock connector (and because we are currently out of stock) you should follow this guide for replacing the dock connector. Just use it to get you to the point where you remove the assembly. Then check all of the connections and cables and make sure that there is no corrosion. If there is, use a cotton swab soaked in some Isopropyl Alcohol to clean it off.

Often times with water damage, if nothing is fried, it can corrode some of the innards of your device. It's always a good idea to try cleaning it up before you actually purchase and install a new part.

Hope this helps!
