Can I use the Seagate Momentus hybrid 750Gb HDD?

Hi,

Running out of space on my MBP17 from 2006 and trying to find out of anyone has tried cloning to and installing one of these Seagate Hybrid drives at all:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-Momentus...

Would be great for the extra space or would it just be safer to use a non-hybrid type?

Thanks,

Sy

Yes, you can use it but it will only read at 1,5 GB. Just remember to format it before trying to install a system. new hard drive not loading from option boot......

Thanks Mayer, do you mean formatting before cloning my laptop drive? Also, are their drives that will read faster then as I do a lot of heavy graphic and photography stuff?

Thanks again........

If using SuperDuper to clone you do not need to format. I however have gotten into the habit of formatting every drive and zeroing them out before installing. This maps out any bad blocks and saves me a lot of headaches later on. The SDD drives are much faster.

Thanks again Mayer, I would be using CCC for cloning my current drive and I did find this article regarding using the Seagate XT hybrid drives:

http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Momentus-XT...

Any issues with these drives may have been resolved by now. From what I can gather it looks like the hybrid drives only go up to 5ooGb so maybe I'll stick with the tried and tested normal drive and have an extra 250Gbs.

Thanks again for your response.

Simon, the link you provide is to a regular seagate momentus and not the hybrid version, or XT.

The Seagate Momentus XT 750Gb is a SATA III drive and may or may not be compatible with the SATA I. I tried to find out myself but am still unsure.

The documentation of seagate does mention the drive is compatible with SATA II, but does not mention anything about SATA I.
