Timm Sousa, Personally i would start of with replacing the battery. Make sure that when you pull on the clip that holds that battery cable, that you pull straight up. I use a paperclip bend into an L-shape. Many people break that connector when they pray on it. If you can check the HDD as a separate entity. I use a Zif-to-USB connector from ebay. Costs somewhere around $5. This way you know that it is not the HDD that giv you the error. Also make sure that you have a good USB cable and that the dock connector is okay. Check for \debris, bend pins and/or corrosion.Once you have all that doen re-evaluate and see what it tells you. Of course make sure that you have tried a restore and see if you can access the diagnostics menu and see if that will pinpoint it a bit closer as well. You do that by pushing Menu and Select simultaneously

After it resets, but before it starts back up again, simultaneously hold down Rewind and Select. Here is a great explanation on the menu. Good Luck with it and let us know how it is going. Those iPods do not have all the fancy new Apps but are great MP3 and video player, so do not give up on it...;-)

thank you for that info... i never knew that a zif to usb existed.. i looked into it and its just what i need... i just fixed one of my 5th gen ipods with the diagnostic mode which apparently ive only been putting it a safe mode and not diagnostic mode.. so no i have a 60GB ipod that works thanks to you old turkey, and awaiting parts to fix my other 5th gen 30GB... i had already placed an order for 2 new batteries when your answer came through confirming that a battery could be the problem...

thank you again for your help

sophie, what iPod is it? The 5th gen does not come as a 20GB. Is it a 4th or earlier version? Are you wondering how long it take to restore? Does your iPod appear to be stuck?
