Rubbish (insect) under glass iMac 27" 5k late 2015

Hi,

Question about iMac 27" 5k late 2015, a small insect appeared on the matrix under the glass of the matrix, is it possible to disassemble and clean it? Maybe someone faced with dust on this year's models and successfully cleaned it?


The position of the service center: "The display of this device itself is a non-separable part in the conditions of the Authorized service center ... The cost of replacing the display module is $ 800."

How frustrating! we’ve seen this a number of times on earlier ranges, but not on this range yet.

It is classed as a ‘bonded’ unit, but in reality, the glass surface is bonded to the LCD panel around the edges, but the backlight diffuser sheets are not ‘sealed’ or ‘bonded’. So you can strip it down from behind. (It does frustrate me the way ASP and AASP providers push the ‘bonded’ excuse for dust and marks stating its ‘impossible’, but its just not the case)

But in truth, without a clean room environment, you’d risk leaving a lot more behind than just a small bug, as when you open the layers it is much more susceptible to dust and dark patches. We’ve done it before, but its not a fun process…

I’d suggest trying to lightly tap the glass to see if it will drop down, as it is likely touching either the glass or LCD surface. Hopefully it will drop out of the viewable area to the edge of the panel.

Maybe I will sort out the display a little bit so as to shake it out.

I have the same exact problem . . it looks like a tiny ant that appears on my 5k Retine 27” screen. Tried tapping, vacuuming, etc without any success. I’ve been told that the monitor and the protective monitor cover are “fused” together making the cleaning or repair a major endeavor. Was also told by a local Mac service tech that it’s impossible for a tiny ant to get in their. Obviously, it IS possible and I have this proof, unfortunately. So far, no real help. Inclined to live with it for fear of the “side effects” which might result from a major repair.

everyone talks about the panels being 'fused' or 'bonded' and it being impossible to get anything underneath. Thats completely wrong.

The glass panel is bonded to the LCD panel, yes, but the backlight diffuser sheets and the rear aluminium case are NOT fused. There are seams all round the edges that have a bit of tape over them to 'prevent' dust ingress.

Its very possible for small objects to get between the LCD and the backlight sheets, just not between the glass and the LCD panel. Its just as visible either way.

The really common brown streaks on these later ranges is caused by dust ingress, which has led to a class action lawsuit. if the panels were truly 'bonded' this wouldn't be the case.

I've written a blog about it with photos of the layers.

It can be opened and cleaned, but it is still a difficult job, as any dust at all will show up as dark patches when between the backlight sheets. It needs a clean room environment.
