MacBook Pro Screen Glitch

I am not sure how to explain this to someone but I have contacted apple and they gave me a few options like reseting the NVRAM and SMC. They told me that if that did not work to go to a store to have to looked at by a professional. I really would like to know what is going on and maybe if anyone has had the same issues. I have added a picture so people can see that is happening to my screen. Also when this is happening I have taken screen shots with the Mac itself and when I do this the screen shot doesn’t show the glitch at all just a normal screen.

Resetting the NVRAM or SMC won't alter this.

Sadly your display is acting up! The T-CON board which is mounted within the main case deals with the raster scan of the display. It’s part of the display assembly.

Think how you weave cloth you have the Warp which are the lines that go up and down and then you have the Weft which goes side to side. In this case the registration of the scan is getting messed up.

Sadly, no... The FlexGate issue was the backlight not the T-CON issue we have here.

Apple has what is called a flat rate repair.

If your machine does not show signs of impact or water damage, you should qualify.

Call 1-800-MYAPPLE and ask for it. In Texas the cost is $357.00 including tax and shipping.

They FedEx you a shipping box overnight. You put it in and drop it off. Three days later your repaired machine will be back in your hands. If they find anything else wrong with it they will fix that too.

They will need your serial number and a credit card when you talk to them.

One of the few things Apple does that’s really nice, but you have to know to ask for it.

It’s either a display issue or a board issue, but not a bad GPU. Hook it up to an external monitor and see if you run into the same problem to rule out the motherboard. With these machines, it’s usually a bad T-Con board, but you can go into the Apple store telling them it’s the display and save a lot of time if you do your own testing.

If you see it happen on the external display AND internal display, the motherboard is bad and you’re going to be paying out of pocket since it isn’t part of the display repair program. If the display is bad, you should be covered for free.

In order to test the display, you will need to get a USB-C display adapter locally since it is a time sensitive repair. As far as which one I would suggest buying, I would buy one like this (USB-C to HDMI), which will work with most monitors made within the past 5 years. Note: If you are using a DVI test monitor without HDMI, you will need a cable like this.

@nick there are USB-C to miniDP adapters, not sure why you got into that.

Re-read what you wrote you spent a lot of time going into the testing using an external monitor and nothing on the problem.

Having a sentence or two on what was needed should have sufficed. You wrote three full paragraphs! Diving into older less used interfaces. There is times when something long is needed this is not one of those cases. Edit your answer to the focus of testing in one short paragraph and I'll undo my down vote.

This issue with part of the displays image jiggling effect is a known issue within the display in the newer TB & Fn models (design defect - over heating of the T-CON bd).

@danj At the time I wrote it, I didn't see any of them - it was a time specific comment. USB-C was so new so it wasn't a thing at the time. Noted not to make poorly aging assumptions next time.

I'm working on correcting it. Hopefully I fixed the issues.

For what it’s worth I’ve had display issues (again) with my 2016, MBP touch 13”. I got seven bands of bright pink and greens across the display. To Apple’s credit I rang Thursday last week and it was repaired and back to me by the Tuesday, free of charge .

This is now the 3rd display this machine has had as well as the 3rd Top case assembly, all covered by Apple Care until this incident. They warned me of a potential £400+ repair bill, but UK consumer law is pretty good and Apple have honoured that.

I would add given how much you have faced you should sign up for the AppleCare+ support contract it will save you money! It will give you two more years of hardware support!

You are very lucky! Having two years of product warranty! Here in the states we are not so lucky ;-{

It now appears Apple has quite a few 2016/17 models with failing T-CON boards! I've counted over 100 just here!
