No power, no red standby light. Completely dead.

Hello,

My mother has a Samsung UN58H5202AF tv that just powered off while she was watching it. It will no longer power on and the red standby light is no longer lit up either. I have tried the troubleshooting steps such as full reset by holding power while unplugging and such, unplugged for several days, checked outlet, remote, etc. Seems it is likely a hardware issue. I watched some videos regarding checking capacitors. I went ahead and removed the panel, but the video showed bulging capacitors which I do not appear to have any that are bulging, so I am not sure that is my issue. I really don’t know much about this stuff, so hoping someone may be able to give me some direction on what to do and how to do it.

Oh, and no. There was no storm at the time it quit. Seemed pretty random actually.

Was there a storm occurring when the TV powered off?

If the TV is connected to a power board, try connecting it directly to a wall outlet and check if it now works

Have you checked that the fuse on the TV’s power board is OK?

If the fuse is OK then you need to check that the various voltage outputs being supplied by the power board are OK.

If you don't have a suitable DMM (digital multimeter) and if you don't know how to use one, as there are potentially lethal voltages on the power board when the power is connected to the TV, even in the standby state, I suggest that you contact a reputable, professional TV repair service and ask for a quote to repair the TV.

Thanks for the reply. I do not really have a lot of expendable cash, nor does my mother to call in a repair guy. I do have an Amazon gift card, so I was already looking into ordering a soldering kit and multimeter. I am not entirely sure how to test as I have never done any of that, but the TV has been unplugged for well over a week, I figured it shouldn't have any residual power left at this point. I assume you just touch both ends of the fuse to see if you get a reading? Hoping I can get this figured out on my own.

Hi @breach ,

Testing the fuse using the Ohmmeter function of a DMM (with the power disconnected from the TV) will prove whether it is OK or not. (see the user guide which should be supplied with the DMM on how to use its various functions)

However testing the voltage outputs from the power board using the DC Voltmeter function of a DMM, requires that the power IS CONNECTED to the TV as the power board converts the AC input to the suitable DC voltages required by the TV. As I said this is where is can be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing, either to you and to the TV!

Thank you again for the response and the information. I think I will go ahead and order the DMM with my giftcard for Amazon. If it turns out to be just the fuse, then it's a win. I did not realize about testing the voltage with the TV plugged in. I can definitely understand that being more dangerous and respect the warning regarding that. I will update with my findings once I get the DMM. Thank you again.
