Installing 6Gb or 8Gb ram

Hello,

I have a Macbook Pro 15" 2,5GHz (early 2008), model identifier MacBookPro4,1 model number A1260.

I currently have 2Gb of RAM installed in a 1+1Gb configuration.

I would like to upgrade to at least 4Gb, but I have read around the web that someone was able to upgrade up to 6 or 8gb:

Why is the maximum amount of ram available only 6Gb?

In this topic is reported a firmware upgrade that would enable the A1260 to accept up to 8gb.

Is it correct? has anyone tried (and succeeded) to do so?

If not what are my upgrade options?

Thanks for posting a link to my previous answer on this question. If you read the link to the OWC finding, I don't understand what the question is, it pretty well address the issue. And yes, I have 8 GB of RAM working in my MacBook Pro 2.53. But you must have one of the affected models for this to work:

MacBook 13.3″ 2.0GHz and 2.4GHz

MacBook Pro 15″ 2.4GHz (All)

MacBook Pro 15″ 2.53GHz model w/ExpressCard Slot (Late 2008)

MacBook Pro 15″ 2.8GHz model w/ExpressCard Slot (Late 2008)

Hi Mayer I have read the link but my question is that my macbook pro is NOT an unibody (ie: MacBookPro5,1 ) which is the kind of macbook pro mentioned in the article.

Thus the said firmware upgrade does not apply to MBP 4,1.

These are my current firmware versions..:(

Boot ROM Version: MBP41.00C1.B03

SMC Version: 1.27f3

You're going to have to live with 6 GB maximum. Apple officially supports a maximum of 4 GB of RAM but third-parties have been able to upgrade the system to 6 GB of RAM using one 2 GB and one 4 GB memory module.

for your machine, i cannot find any trace of proof of it working with more then 6 GB of RAM. the next model up, the late 08 macbook pro, will work with 8 GB of RAM using that firmware.
