Turns on but screen is too dark.

I have a mid 2010 unibody macbook pro 13" which i am able to turn on and use (with a lamp directly on it) but the screen is insanely dim. I was told that these do noty have an inverter (or they are built in) so what would I need to replace or fix in order to correct this malfunction.

Cody, I'm sorry you ran into all this politicking. I know you just came here for a simple answer on how to fix your Mac. Unfortunately there is no simple solution for you. The driver that appears to have failed on your machine is integrated into the logic board. To test this before you go further, please hook it up to an external monitor. If you get a picture then I am wrong and we can go from there. If you get no picture you will either need a professional logic board repair or a replacement logic board ($617 to $800 from iFixit). You can click on Josh's icon and find his company and get a quote although I hate to encourage this guy. Or, use somebody like DT&T services, their fee is $325 + shipping. Or you can get a flat rate fee from Apple for $280 + shipping and they will fix any and all problems they find for that fee. I did a 2009 MacBook last week, they replaced the logic board, screen and bottom case all for the $280. Apple is not trying to make money with this service, they are trying to keep customers.

apple will only depot repair it at that cost if its not from liquid or physical damage. The issue you describe is generally caused by one or both. I've never seen the backlight just go out on its own.

Well, thanks for the downvote Josh. I will give your advice all the weight it deserves. BTW - the OP didn't mention a word about liquid damage or physical damage. I see your answer now also includes advise about an Apple Depot Repair, but you downvote me for it. That seems to me as a bit hypocritical

Sounds like it is your inverter (found between LCD and Board) usually a slim white plastic enclosed, with wires on both ends, going to the board, and lcd.

Ali, this would have been a great answer several years ago but the 13" has no separate inverter.

I've seen this a ton of times, however usually after a liquid spill. You are correct there is no backlight inverter, there is a led driver on the logic board and a backlighting fuse. If you are positive it wasn't a liquid spill or dropped, take it to apple. Worst case you have to do a depot repair at $280..

Why can't you post them? iFixit isn't a place for saying "I have this secret information that can't be shared on the internet." We're building a database of free, open repair knowledge. If you have a solution, post it. It's critical that this post be a useful place for people that stumble across it. Asking people to PM you for the information is not acceptable here.

Post your apple confidential schematics then Mayer..this is why this site gets a bad name, because of guys like you that just sit at their computer and try to antagonize people who are legitimately offering advice. Not saying none of you are engineers. However I am and you'll notice I haven't asked a single question just answer questions of others. Not everyone has the skill set to fix anything that goes wrong and Mayer is a part jockey. His solution is to replace because he doesn't know how to repair anything at the component level.

Let it go.....we all appreciate that you are having all the answers and do not have to ask any questions. That by itself makes you far superior than anyone else.....whoa I am really impressed. Get over yourself and your silent black helicopters. You are using multiple usernames on here and have people IM you for further information etc....sounds like a spook to me :-) I do not like to interfere with anyone's opinion but the constant bashing of other members and chronic inflammatory remarks are to much. I did not know that this site has a bad reputation. Where did you get that tidbit of information?

da

I have one username this is ridiculous. You are an idiot. Sorry but nobody trained by apple checks out ifixit when they have problems with a machine. Amateurs look on this site for help

You sound very angry. What was it that made you angry enough to lose your temper and to revert to name calling? How does it make you feel? Yes, you are absolutely correct. Amateurs look on here for answer to maintain their devices. That is what gives this site a bad name? Must be another Apple engineering inside thing, because I do not see anything wrong with that. Having checked your claim "I haven't asked a single question just answer questions of others." I noticed that you managed to give three answers to the same question in 9 month, that is pretty impressive and shows your involvement on here.
