Cause 1

The Evaporator Coils are Frosted Over

The defrost heater assembly turns on a few times throughout the day to melt away any frost that may have accumulated on the evaporator coils. If the defrost heater assembly is defective, frost will continue to accumulate on the evaporator coils, and the coils will become plugged with frost. If the evaporator coils are frosted over, the airflow through the coils will be restricted, causing the refrigerator not to cool. Check the evaporator coils to determine if they are frosted over. If the evaporator coils are frosted over, test each component of the defrost system.

Cause 2

Evaporator Fan Motor

The evaporator fan motor draws cold air over the evaporator coils and circulates it throughout the freezer. If the evaporator fan is not working, the freezer or refrigerator will not cool adequately. To determine if the evaporator fan motor is defective, try turning the fan blade by hand. If the fan blade does not turn freely, replace the fan motor. Additionally, if the motor is unusually noisy, replace it. Finally, if the motor does not run at all, use a multimeter to test the motor windings for continuity. If the windings do not have continuity, replace the evaporator fan motor..

Cause 3

Damper Control Assembly

The air damper control opens and closes to let the proper amount of cold air into the refrigerator compartment. If the damper does not open properly, it won’t let enough cold air into the refrigerator. Check the damper control to determine if it is broken or stuck closed.

I just wanted to add my personal experience with a similar model GE refrigerator. I have had a very similar experience with my GE french door refrigerator and the problem was simply a bad thermistor. The one in the top section had gone bad causing the freezer to be cold but not the top. I will add the parts are cheap and fairly easy to replace and testing them to be sure is also fairly simple. I did end up having to replace the one in the freezer at a later date as well.

Dear Phone Menders Most refrigerator have only one cooling system and that is for the freezer. The refrigerator part is then cooled by a damper from the freezer. Answering these questions is really complicated because we don't know the model number first. If we had that info the answer could be directed to that specific machine and we would even be able to get part numbers.

I understand where the cold air comes from but I am only recommending they check the simplest and cheapest part of the system before they go on to tearing apart the refrigerator to get to the other parts. Again I have an nearly identical refrigerator that had the exact same symptoms. The solution was as simple as replacing the thermistor in the top of the refrigerator. This part literally costs a few dollars and can easily be tested before replacing it to find out if it is bad.

Several GE French Door Models have 2 Evaporators. One in freezer & 1 in Refrig. section. The flow is of Refrigeration is dictated by a directional Solenoid. Regulated by thermistors in each compartment. If freezer section is ex... -14 & fresh food section is 68. We are not getting refrigerant to Fresh Food Evap. Leading us to believe we have a thermistor, main control board, solenoid (rare) or sealed system issue requiring you to test these components or maybe even accessing into sealed system to check pressure.
